Tom and I are together so much that we occasionally worry we are becoming variants of each other. I’m sometimes concerned that our respective appearances might compound the iamu effect. Neither of us have much hair, nor are we particularly tall. Both of us favour spectacles with heavy rims, have similar accents, are the same age, and we both often wear the same kinds of boots, outdoor jackets . . .
. . . and sometimes knitwear too.

I’ve designed Kilbrannan Sound for wearers of any gender, with square-r proportions and roomier upper arms. The pattern also has two ranges, altering the proportions and dimensions of sleeves and body.

Whether you like your pullovers close fitting or with lots of ease, in a longer or more cropped length, after measuring an existing garment and consulting the pattern’s sizing table, it should be possible to achieve a fit that works.
The pullover I showed you on me yesterday is knitted in the first size, with four inches positive ease, in the smaller range. Tom’s is knitted in third size, similarly with four inches of ease, in the longer range.

Tom wanted his Kilbrannan Sound in darker grey. He choose our Ooskit yarn, in the natural Horkel shade.

The raglan shaping works well around squarer shoulders.

. . . and this longer length is great as well.

Obviously, our roles have been reversed for this occasion. For once, I am behind the camera, giving direction.

While he’s hamming it up out front.

Ours is an equal partnership: together, we can turn our hands to anything. But it’s probably best that we avoid wearing our Kilbrannan Sounds out and about at the same time.

Kate, you gather such fun people to you. You guys are the best! I had so many reactions to this post, and then I laughed aloud at how the fifteen comments already covered EVERYTHING I was going to say. I’m loving this Davaar series (check); I loved the cream sweater, but I fear my reliable habit of dribbling dark foods when I wear light colors (check); I love both of these sweaters (check) and the hilarious Tom-as-supermodel pose (check); and the fact that your post explores so playfully what happens in long term couples (check).
But most of all, this: How, indeed, could you have failed to include a picture of BOTH of you in your lovely sweaters?!? The suspense killed me! I wonder if it was because you had no third companion during this shoot? Hmmm. . . I forgive you on the grounds that I like imagining you two heading for the hills alone together for the day’s adventure. (But I still hope that pic makes it into the book. . .)
Thanks again, Kate (and Tom!)–you brighten my days and inspire my creative energy!
ha ha – thank you, Meg – you are right, though – we were on our own on the island photographing this collection, so the matchy-matchy photograph proved somewhat tricky!
Rocking the Woolly Sex-God Vibe there Tom!
Great work
I totally think you should wear your sweaters together – the similarities of the sweaters might accent your individualities otherwise ;-)
Now we just need a doggie sweater to make the family complete!
That’s so lovely! My favorite knitwear designs are those that have history to them, and that will probably outlast the ebbs and flows of trendy fashion. Your stuff is such a joy to see and knit!
I am thoroughly enjoying this series of Davaar posts!
As always, I find beauty, history, geography, inspiration and joy.
I laughed when I say today’s pattern. Kate has nailed it on the perfect ‘couples pattern’!
Reading yesterday’s post I decided to pre-order a book, first thinking the pattern in a cream was right for me, but then I thought this would be great for my husband if I upsized it in a brown heather, then I see today’s pattern posting –whoo. My husband and I have often joked about sharing one brain, maybe we all share some part on the one brain.
What a great photo shoot Kate and Tom. Love seeing him “hamming it up”. Your photography is as good as the knitwear! Sue S.
What a wonderful post and with great photos of Tom hamming it up! How delightful to be true partners (with or without the same knitwear!).
I’m still partial to yesterday’s version on you in cream, although this dark grey version would be more practical for those of us who tend to get dirty/spill our drinks (count me among them). This would also be perfect in a dark blue
Love your posts and would like to have your book. I live in Canada and am coming to Woolweek in Shetland in September, wondering if your book will be available in the stores there? Trying to avoid the shipping cost as at times they are doubling the price of the book.
Hi, we do try to keep our shipping low and reasonable – at current rates shipping to Canada is around £8, making the book plus shipping £30
The Shetland Times Bookshop in Lerwick stock some of our books, so you may be able to acquire a copy there.
Alternatively, the Woolly Thistle stock this and most of our other books, so you could order a copy on your side of the Atlantic if preferred
Kilbrannan Sound in Horkel is gorgeous! I love that you’ve designed it to work for most bodies and preferences! Thank you!
Showed this to hubby this morning and he loves it – he said it would be a nice warm winter jumper and he likes that it was different to other patterns – this is a 10 out of 10 as he is hard to please. I think we will both be wearing these come the winter.
I knit my partner an aran sweater a few years back that had lots of this cable pattern in it; I love walking my fingers up it, it’s so tactile – and was great fun to knit. Lovely photos! Two beautiful sweaters that look really comfy.
Oh no, I was waiting the whole text to see both of you side to side :)
Would love to see that too
What ply wool is used? It’s a beautiful sweater. 🌟
Isn’t it strange how the longer we’re with our partner the similarities emerge, I think we start to become the same person- two peas in a pod, my other half, soul mates…
I think that you should definitely wear these jumpers together- remember Howard and Hilda!
Beautiful design Kate:)
Oh this is Brilliant! Dave saw yours yesterday and thought he would like one. We have his and hers versions of quite a few things and wear them at the same time often! I’m so pleased we are not the only ones who are like this. Fantastic to see Tom on the other side of the camera too.
dear kate
when i saw your kilbrannan sound yesterday i loved it immediately and for my inner eye it turned into todays version – i prefer the darker colors and a loose fitted version
and nooo you should wear your knitwear the same time to show the world what you both love
all my best wishes birgit
