One of the great pleasures of Davaar is taking a walk around the island, up and over the high hillside, to enjoy the panoramic views. You begin your walk looking over the lighthouse to east Kintyre and the isle of Arran. Then, as you rise up the hill, the Ayrshire coast and Ailsa Craig emerge from the horizon. Finally, from the island’s summit, on a clear day, there’s a fine view all the way across Kintyre to Machrihanish, the isles of Islay and Jura, the Antrim coastline, and the Atlantic, far beyond.
The island landscape is high, exposed, and often rather windy. You are going to need a hat.

This one features the same twisted stitch patterns as the Iola cardigan.

There are columns of zigzags, purl dots, and mini cables.

The hat’s name is Signals and Noise – suggesting both its textured surface, and the lighthouse of Davaar.

Which, every night, flashes twice every ten seconds, through the darkness.

The simple, undyed, crowdie colourway of our Schiehallion yarn shows up this noisy texture wonderfully well.

But I think this hat looks great in colour too.

Here it is in rhubarb – a soft and muted red.

We are half way through our walk now, looking west from Davaar, across the Doirlinn.

That’s Campbeltown that you can see, over there.

It’s time to descend from the island’s windy summit

. . . finish our walk, and head back for a cup of tea.

A big shout out to Beverley, our test knitter, who helped me in the development of Signals and Noise. I’ll show you more of Beverley’s work here in a few days!
The Davaar book will ship at the beginning of September, and is available to pre-order from the KDD shop
