One of the many delights of being out and about in the Scottish Highlands in June and July is the abundance of gloriously colourful dragonflies and damselflies. As we walked around Wester Ross last week, it was wonderful to see different species whizzing about in the warm air. Tom became particularly obsessed with the huge golden-ringed dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii) – Scotland’s largest dragonfly – of which we saw a great many. He took a few photographs of this remarkable beastie and I thought you’d like to see them.

    Excellent photos!
They bring up some very happy memories of sitting at my uncle’s farm in Saskatchewan, watching the dragonflies hunting mosquitos. We cheered every time they caught one. :D

Truly amazing , especially those delicately partitioned wings! And the vibrant color contrasts are spectacular as well. I see inspiraton for a garment celebrating those little ‘dragons’ and ‘damsels’. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Great photos, thanks.

  6. Amazing photos for an amazing creature. LOVE that Yellow face but those wings, truly gossamer.

Beautiful photos Tom. Norah Gaughan has a jumper design with a dragon fly, one on my to do list , in 40 Timeless Knits.

  10. OMG LOOK AT THOSE EYES!!! So cool. And the wee hairy face… we get lots of Mayflies, Damselflies and Dragonflies down here around the canals as well – their presence is such a lovely sign of summer.

Amazing photographs. I love dragon flies. Hope that Bruce enjoyed his own special holiday. I think he deserves a potato. Our cats are on holiday because we have had the kitchen re done. They wouldn’t have liked the noise at all.

  12. Gorgeous photos! Tom really brings this creature into a whole new realm of fascination. Thank you!

  13. Thanks. I love watching dragonflies too.

  14. Stunning!

  15. Thank you! I’ve always loved Dragonflies but especially since we lived next door to a young boy. At the end of one summer we identified the dragonflies in the backyard. The next spring when we saw our first dragonflies and he looked up and said, “Look! Flying dragons !”
