Just a quick post to let you know that all is well around here. On Friday evening, while I was on a plane from Shetland to Edinburgh, Tom had been taken to hospital with appendicitis. He was in an awful lot of pain, so they fired him up with morphine, and kept him in overnight pending surgery. But some bouts of appendicitis resolve themselves without surgical intervention, and happily that is what seems to have happened to Tom. By yesterday lunchtime he was feeling much better, and congratulating himself on his resting heart rate which, at just 35 beats per minute, was remarked upon by the nurses (it is a runner’s thing). He is still a bit peaky, and in pain, and we are both rather tired, but otherwise all is well. Three cheers for Mel who came to the rescue and, in double-quick time, drove a moaning and groaning Tom to the Royal Infirmary!
Wellness wishes to the heroic, kilty Tom.

Hadn’t heard about it resolving. In the States, I expect that the appendix would have come out. I am envious of the heart rate – even though I am a rower, my resting heart rate is high. But doctors have commented on my very strong abdominal muscles.

So glad to hear that the appendicitis resolved all on its own. Hurrah for Tom! (And Mel’s fast chauffeuring!)

Glad to hear you are both ok. That is an amazing resting pulse rate Tom has. Best wishes.

So fortunate to have a friend close by to take Tom to hospital. I’m very happy to hear that he is on the mend. How are you feeling nowadays?

One of my earliest memories (I was only 3 or 4) is being very ill with stomach pains, which was probably my appendix, but fortunately it sorted itself out, as that was long before there was a hospital within sight of the house!!

Yikes! That happened to me, too, but then several years later, my appendix went bad for reals, and I had to have it removed. I think I went almost 10 years after the first incidence, so it isn’t like you need to be on the lookout for a relapse. Hope everyone is feeling better :)

Wishes for a speedy & complete recovery, Tom! Many thanks to dear Mel for stepping up to the plate when needed. The Rams and Yowes blanket — what can I say, I’m “terrified” of colorwork, but that is so so tempting.

Hope he’s feeling better soon.
The heartbeat thing is just one of those benefits of running, I had the same thing happen to me when I had to go in hospital last year for a small op, though I think your Tom is a much fitter runner than me!
Happy knitting (and running to Tom when he’s feeling better).
Fleur xx
(ps. in total awe of your Rams and Yowes Blanket)

Good to hear he’s doing well! I had appendicitis of the not-so-easily-resolved sort when I was in middle school. Thank goodness Tom didn’t have to go through THAT!

Indeed, in Australia they’re terribly wont to whip out appendices at the least indication also. I had a friend with abdominal pain who was tested for appendicitis, didn’t have it, they decided to remove her appendix ‘just in case,’ she awoke from surgery to have the doctor say “Yep, we took it out and checked it – definitely not appendicitis! Still not sure what’s causing that pain!” She could have punched him the face, I think!

Best wishes to Tom for a speedy recovery! And kudos to Mel for getting him to the Royal Infirmary (sounds so nice to write that) so quickly. I have never heard of an appendix resolving on its own, so he is one lucky guy! A burst appendix is no fun at all.
Hope he is better soon, because I am sure, like all runners, he is itching to get back out for his daily run lest he lose his wind or fitness or time or something, and as I write this he may be out there already! Best to you both, and Bruce too.

Oh wow, glad to hear he’s feeling better. My Tom had his out last year, also an emergency. I was completely unaware that they sometimes right themselves though!
Reminds me of Roald Dahl’s ‘boy’ & the loose toothbrush bristles!

So glad to hear all is well. In the US, they would never let appendicitis resolve itself – surgery for one and all… Take care!

Yes, it is a runner’s thing; DH has a resting heart rate at 37 beats/min… Makes other people raise an eyebrow and me envious :)

Get well soon Tom. I think you are in good hands in Scotland re health care from what I have heard. So if I get appendicitis I am flying over there …long trip. Never heard that it could repair itself so I will keep that in mind as I nurse some nasty stomach pains this weekend. They asked me if I was a runner when admitted for emergency gall bladder surgery, didn’t know it was significant at the time. Always a learning exerience reading your blog Kate.

wow so glad Tom is doing well. and 35 for a resting heartbeat!! hope you continue to feel better. both of you get your rest.
but I have to comment I am jealous I got to the last part and saw Mel drove Tom to the Royal Infirmary–I mean is it just me? Royal Infirmary sounds so much better than ER.
I drove my husband to the ER 3 weeks ago and a day turned into 3 days at the hospital and then an expensive ride to another hospital and another 5 days for surgery and recovery. don’t get me wrong the doctors in the ER were great but a Royal Infirmary sounds better. Maybe the next time either of get sick it should be in Scotland! (just kidding of course)

Two of my kids who were born in Edinburgh delight in the fact that they were born in the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavillion – so much posher than a mere hospital they feel!
Just back from an exhibition at the Wellcome Collection of Mexican paintings done to give thanks to various saints for an individual’s deliverance from all sorts of harm. I can imagine a secular version of Tom’s deliverance from appendicitis. Many of the paintings – on bits of hardboard and the like dating from the 18th century to the present day – featured operating theatres.
Best wishes to Tom for a full recovery,
Joan

Poor Tom, I remember when my teenage son was struck down, it can reduce a strong healthy man to crawling on his hands and knees. At least Tom had the “good grace” (luck) to wait until you were on your way back! Hope he gets permanently better soon.
