It’s time to announce the KDD summer KAL! Will you join us and knit yourself a Yorlin?

Colorful knitted swatches hanging on a line with the text 'YORLIN KAL' and 'KDD & Co' on a turquoise background.

Knitted in 4ply (or equivalent) at a gauge of 28 stitches to 4 inches, Yorlin is a lightweight, airy cardigan.

A person in a yellow knitted cardigan is adjusting their outfit, which features a blue dress with a fish pattern. They have a yellow belt on and are outdoors with a grassy background.

Knitted from the top down, Yorlin features raglan shaping through the upper body, twisted-stitch trims, and two beautiful lace panels worked over each of the cardigan fronts.

There are 12 sizes (ranging from 33 to 60½ inches) and you can knit the body to a length that is just right for you and your summer wardrobe – from a cropped cardi that sits above high-waisted trousers or a longer line to work with a floaty dress.

The Yorlin sample in these photographs features the bright yellow shade of Milarrochy Tweed (cowslip) which originally gave this design its name (Yorlin being a Scots word for the Yellowhammer). But yellow can be a divisive colour, and if it doesn’t appeal to you, fear not! I and my brilliant test knitters have been hard at work whipping up Yorlins of many different hues which we hope will inspire you, whatever your colour preferences.

Over the next few weeks, as the KAL progresses, I’ll be introducing you to seven very different and very beautiful Yorlins, as well as writing a series of essays about colour which may help you reflect upon your preferred palette(s) and really think about what it means to to enjoy knitting with, or wearing, particular shades and hues.

So, if you’d like to join us for some leisurely summer knitting fun, all you need is a copy of the Yorlin pattern and some suitable 4 ply yarn. You can knit your Yorlin in KDD yarn, of course, and if you’d like to do that, we have 24 beautiful shades of Milarrochy Tweed to choose from . . .

. . .and this pattern also works wonderfully well with the subtly variegated neutral tones of our Ooskit 4ply. . .

You might also like to head over to the KDD Ravelry group, where Claire and the team are there to welcome you to the KAL, and assist with any queries you may have. If you are new to lace, or top-down knitting, have questions about choosing a size, or want a second (or third) opinion about your button choices, your Yorlin comrades will be very happy to help.

In the meantime, here’s some information about the KAL in brief:

  • The knitalong will run from Saturday May 30th to Saturday September 26th. That’s four whole months to knit yourself a Yorlin! There is no pressure, and there are no intermediate deadlines.
  • All you need is a copy of the Yorlin pattern and enough 4ply yarn to knit your preferred size (see the pattern for full sizing and yardage information)
  • Share your knitting progress and get support with pattern queries in the KDD Ravelry Group.
  • Subscribe to the KDD newsletter for lots of colourful inspiration from me in coming weeks.
  • When you have completed your Yorlin, post a photo of your finished cardigan in the KDD Ravelry group to be eligible for one of our fabulous KAL prizes
  • Enjoy four months of leisurely knitting, and end the summer with a beautiful cardigan!

I’ll be back here tomorrow to show you two brand new Yorlin samples, and take you on a wee tour of my garden, in which the cardigans have been photographed. We’ll be updating the Yorlin pattern with the new sample photography tomorrow: if you buy (or have previously bought) the Yorlin pattern on Ravelry, you’ll receive an update with the new photography and yarn information then. The Inkling e-book (in which this pattern is included) will also receive tomorrow’s pattern update and we’ll also have Yorlin kits in 2 new colourways in the KDD shop. And if you have any questions about the KAL in the meantime, please just post them in the comments and I’ll get back to you.

The Yorlin was the very first sweater I knit using Millarwochy Tweed using the yellow and have since knit several more sweaters in that yarn which I just love. I just gave my yellow sweater to my sister as my complexion seems to have changed with age so it no longer looks as good on me. She looks great in it. I am considering that new interesting teal colour for a future project.

Is the Yorlin in any of Kate’s books? Memory not what it used to be. Thought I’d seen it in one of my KDD books. This morning’s search was not productive.

    Hi Kate
I bought the pattern last week by chance so I can knit myself a summer cardi. I bought it on Ravelry and would love to join the KAL. Would you be able to give us all a few pointers on navigating the Ravelry group. Sort of how to comment or read new posts. I’ve been on Ravelry for years but never joined in with anything like this before so a bit unsure how to use it.
    Thank you
    Janet

    1. Welcome to the KAL Janet, and no problem, Janet – I’ll do a post specifically about Ravelry for you.

I knitted Yorlin earlier this year in black merino possum and it’s been my dress work cardigan with soooooo many compliments. Thanks 🤩

Hi there I would like to join your summer Kat, love the cardigan. I was wondering if I understand the pattern correctly, do you pick a size 4 inches larger than your bust size or choose your bust size? Thanks. I tried ordering the kit but it only lets you choose between two colours. The Ooskit 4 ply looks nice as well.

    1. Hi Kathy, there will be other options available in coming days, or you can always email Maylin (help@katedaviesdesigns.com) to make up a custom kit in your preferred colour. The size you select depends on the fit that you prefer, but in general I’d advise selecting a size that is 1 or 2 sizes above your actual bust measurement. There are other measurements included in the sizing table to help you assess which size to knit. In coming days, I will show you several samples knitted by our testing team in different sizes, and with different fits.

I’m so pleased that you are doing a summer KAL, I wouldn’t have minded which pattern you had chosen, but I’ve loved Yorlin ever since Inkling was released so I’ll enjoy taking part.
I’ll be using stash yarn Kate as I’ve so much to use up and this is the perfect opportunity ❤️

Yorlin KALI am interested but don’t want the yellow shown but that is all that I am able to select on your kit link from Ravelry. Something is wrong about this. Could you please advise.

    Ann Jones

    1. You can have a kit in any of the 24 shades of Milarrochy Tweed you prefer, Ann – we will be introducing the Yorlin in some new colourways tomorrow – but in the meantime if you email Maylin and let her know your preferred colour she can make up a kit for you: help@katedaviesdesigns.com

Dear Kate Davies and colleagues Is it possible to have patterns of those lovely squares pictured here. I have a stash of beautiful KD wool I bought for a striped jumper and I never got it done. They would be perfect for those coloured balls of wool. Thank you. Kind regards Claire Jackson

Hi, I’d love to participate in this KAL but I’ve just arrived in France on holiday for potentially just over a month 😭. Perhaps I’ll be able to catch up when I return to the UK 🤞
