I recently drove down to Sussex to visit my friend Felix in her new home.

This was a proper break for me, of the kind I take all too rarely. I got to spend a whole week happily hanging out with Felix in some wonderful places that are very special to her, but are new and completely unfamiliar to me: Hastings, St Leonards, Rye, Bexhill on Sea.

Felix took me to her lovely beaches . . .

We embraced Hastings’ many excellent attractions with joyful gusto . . .

. . . including the West Hill lift and castle (a great place for a fascinating history walk); the smugglers’ caves (where we enjoyed eighteenth-century graffiti and Hairy Jack’s lo-fi animatronic antics); and the aquarium (a chromatic feast for the eyes, including – yes – a mantis shrimp!)

We visited thought-provoking exhibitions (an especial treat to see Eden Kötting’s Tell Tale Rooms, having followed her work and that of her father, Andrew, for many years); pottered about in many inspiring wee shops (including Warp & Weft and Merchant & Mills) and hung out in some lovely cafes (I especially enjoyed the second-hand vinyl-filled basement in Dandelion, and the cakes at Hanushka).

We walked for miles around the shoreline at St Leonards, Rye Harbour and Pett Level, idly beachcombing, chatting, listening to skylarks, terns, and geese . . .
. . . enjoying light, space and some truly glorious spring weather.

What a special few days I had, larking about with my dear friend!

As you can see, I also had fun recording our trip with the instax camera, which Tom bought me for my birthday last year, and of whose pleasures (in producing quite rubbish, yet somehow genuinely atmospheric images) I’m a massive fan.

I also love arranging my instax images in an album, whose shonky materiality is far more satisfying to me than any endless scroll.

More rejuvenating breaks! More material pleasures! More larks! Thank you, Felix, for a truly fabulous week. Let’s not leave it too long until the next time!

We too discovered Hastings and Dungeness last year, places I had heard of but never before visited, we live in a wonderful country, just need to get up and go and visit !
Thank you so much for coming to visit – it was so brilliant to have this parcel of time together for playing; and so wonderful to be able to share the glorious gems of my new home town with you. Yes let’s do it again soon – there is nothing better than IN REAL LIFE ADVENTURES! Campbeltown next time?
Larking the Best word for your trip. I am thrilled you got to go and enjoy another part of the country with Felix. And that was a long drive for you, good job!
what an interesting camera. Have to look it up :)
Looks like the perfect break, Kate! The video of the West Hill Lift had my heart in my mouth — eek! I agree about an actual physical photo album. I never sit down with a friend to look at the photos on my phone. Does anyone?
Thank you for the really wonderful Making Light club. Such wonderful designs! The photos and essays too — I really appreciate all the work you put into creating a full experience for us. All of the patterns are wonderful! I’ve finished a Blue Monk and three hats — two Dirkins, one Sonsie. Now I need to decide which pattern to cast on next!
Wow Beverlee, you have been busy! Really happy you enjoyed the club
Sounds like you took necessary time re-filling your creative well.
Oh my!
Love following your adventures! Looks great, Captain Mainwaring country!
I have four Instax cameras as a result of bidding on all four on eBay and winning them all. They’re fun! If you don’t know about the film movement that is Lomography you should check it out. I’ve been a member for almost 20 years now and had 5 of my film photos included in one of the Lomo Walls in Germany.
Susan in Michigan USA who is addicted to yarn, patterns by my favorite designers and film cameras.
What fun, Susan!
