Some years at KDD we complete two projects, and some years we finish three. 2023 has been one of those three project years, beginning with Allover.

Published in early spring, this collection of stranded colourwork designs includes fourteen patterns for pullovers . . .

. . . cardigans . . .

. . . and vests . . .

. . . alongside a range of smaller projects . . .

Alongside their knitting, members of our Allover club spent several months exploring a range of different ideas about colour and its uses . . .

. . . and as part of our colourful explorations, we worked with knitters to create samples in several different shades and palettes. . . .

. . . a practice we have carried forward into more recent projects!

The summer months were dominated by the production of our Davaar book, a project we’d started work on back in Autumn 2022.

I particularly enjoyed working on Davaar because Tom and I were able to spend time really developing this project together – he focusing on photography . . .

and film . . .
. . . while I researched and wrote. . .

. . . designed and knitted, in one of my favourite places.

I associate Davaar with my happiest days of 2023, many of which were spent reading and writing, knitting and thinking here in the lookout.

with this glorious ever changing view beyond the window. . .

. . . . or roving on foot about the island, in weather fair and foul . . .

. . . or travelling further afield on long Kintryre coastal walks.

I am very fond indeed of our Davaar book. I love Tom’s photography, and my piece about Archibald Mackinnon’s painted cave is my favourite bit of writing from 2023.

I also confess to a peculiar fondness for these designs, which to me at least, feel very “me.”

. . . and which together display a nice cohesion . . .

. . . which is the happy result of taking forward a few ideas in several different directions . . .

. . . with the help of some great test and sample knitters!

The autumn months of 2023 were completely dominated by Colour Compass. I don’t think any of us realised quite how much work would be involved in creating a knitters’ advent calendar and pattern collection, especially on the product development and packing side. Thank goodness for our dedicated KDD warehouse, team, particularly Kate C and Kendall who really have worked incredibly hard.

. . . and an especial seasonal thank you to Maylin, whose above-and-beyond work this year has included helping Colour Compass knitters to access their ebooks on Christmas Day.

The reward of all our hard work is seeing how much knitters have enjoyed (and are enjoying) Colour Compass. The whole KDD team has been absolutely thrilled by the response to the calendar, both throughout December, as opening each package brought a daily burst of colour joy

. . . and especially now, at the close of the year, as knitters begin to create their own beautiful, colourful projects from their calendar yarn. Happy knitting, everyone!

I should close by acknowledging that 2023 has not, on the whole, been an easy year for me. I spent its first few months struggling with a severe depressive episode, and my experience of the whole year has been somewhat brought down by migraines of the truly horrific, multi-day punishing kind that have made me wonder how on earth migraineur women who do not have the flexibility of managing their own workloads (as I do) get through this phase of life, and keep their jobs. I know I am very fortunate in that respect, as well as in many others, not least in the support of Tom, my wonderful creative partner, and two dogs, whose joyful energy and consistent love of life is very grounding – even on chaos-creating, deadly-nightshade-consuming days (yes BOB – I’m looking at you!).

I’m really looking forward to next year, which (these things being planned well in advance) is already set to involve three very different, highly engaging and super-creative projects about which I am incredibly excited. It will be another three project year for KDD then, but there’s a fourth, purely personal project which fills me with excitement too. Tom and I will be embarking on a big adventure in 2024, about which I can say no more just now, but which you’ll no doubt hear much more of in months to come. My lips are sealed!

Thank you, all of you, for your kind support of KDD’s creative endeavours throughout 2023. And here’s to many good things, for all of you, in the new year that tomorrow brings.

Happy new year to you, Kate, and your amazing team. Your posts have been enriching and inspiring. Send you all good wishes for a happy and healthy 2024.
I so look forward to each of your posts. I know I will find inspiration, beauty, and something new to learn. Thank you so very much for allowing me to see what you do- it truly is amazing and inspiring!
It has been a wonderful year! Happy 2024, KDD!! I just finished another pair of Starkin mitts, and have so many KDD patterns in my queue!! It is a happy dilemma, figuring out what comes next! Thank you!!
Happy New Year to you all, and thank you so much for the essays and inspiration, especially about Green! My daughter came home this Christmas wearing a cardigan I had knitted for her ages ago from Yolks, and said that her other absolute favourite thing I had ever produced for her was Bluebells. She also said, that “there is no point in doing anyone else’s patterns Mum, as these always work out!” Very much looking forward to what you are up to in 2024.
Dear Kate did you ever tried erenumab injection. It gave me my life back. Best wishes happy new year Andrea
Kate, It has taken me a while to find the courage to add a public comment to your wonderful blog posts. I am very much in the background reading but had to add a thank you from dad and myself for the immense work KDD have undertaken with all of these projects. To think of all the details covered to have produced such amazing work last year is astounding! Without doubt Maylin needs a place of recognition for everything she does. I experienced this care even with my imposter syndrome the work the whole team do including your models goes more than the second mile! Tom has a competition for modelling Kilbrannon sound as this is easily dad’s favourite sweater. The knitting community has a lot to thank KDD for and I know for sure I was in my happy place even with a few frogs to join me. I really hope you will be stronger to enjoy another successful year especially your big adventure with Tom. Beverley x

Thank you Kate, Tom and the KDD team for you creativity, enthusiasm, generosity and encouragement to venture into the unknown. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year
Yes, you had a stellar year, despite health and dog issues. Looking forewrd to more creative adventures from you. The Tioraidh is one of my favourites.
Be well,
Happy New Year to all !!
Here’s wishing you and everyone at KDD a joyous new year.
Happy New Year, Kate, Tom, Maylin,Kate C, and Kendall! It has been a fabulous year and the advent kit was such a delight! I started to rearrange colors in the box yesterday and they are all so delightful. I’m not a neutral person but even the neutrals have a lot more color in them than I’d realized. So thank you again for making me stop and look more deeply.
Happy New Year Kate, Tom and canine family! Thank you for for all your inspiration. I’ve not been as active knitting-wise as I’d have liked this year but am currently assembling yarns for a colourful Tioraidh… there is always a KDD design either on my needles or brewing in my mind!
Fantastic video of Davaar and of course the knitting!
Thank you, Kate and Tom, for a wonderful colorful year. I have the sample box and ebook in my cart. I test knitted a baby sweater this Fall. I had the best time choosing the colors for the stripes from 4 Zauberballs that have a myriad of colors within them.
Thank you for bringing such joy to what has been a very emotionally challenging year! I am grateful to have sat on ‘both sides of the needles’ and have loved every minute of it, Bertie has also enjoyed his walks with yarn. From our house to yours we wish you a happy and peaceful New Year and minimal trips to the V.E.T. xx
Happy new year, Sarah and Bertie!
What a lovely end to 2023 and the beginning of 2024. Thank you Kate and Tom for the beautiful photography of places we otherwise wouldn’t know even existed! Sue S. Cape Cod, MA
You’ve transported us over 2023 to the glorious colour and knitting as well as many other things. Thank you so much and a Happy and Creative New Year to you all xx
My guild challenge 2024 is centred round the Olympics. I have decided to knit a colourwork sweater from one of the lovely KD books I bought this year . I love the fact that choosing the colours from the colour compass will meet the criteria of blue , green, red , yellow , black (dk blue!) but will all fit without the harshness of the solid colours of the actual Olympic rings. Totally wearable . Looking forward to sorting out the colours and choosing the pattern -skid tie I think
Thanks for a lovely knitting year to come
Trudy
This sounds wonderful, Trudy – happy knitting!
Congratulations on completion of a great year!
I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the packaging (box, spotted bags, date stickers etc). Clearly both sourcing those and then packing it all up with correct colours in correct bags/dates, and bags in the right place in the box was a lot of work. I really appreciated how much effort you all put into it, and it was a lovely treat to look forward to in December.
I enjoyed the knitsonic posts when I got a chance to read them and, finally, having pattern samples in so many colours is great.
Thanks.
PS I’m saving box and bags to make a mini advent treat for me next year. I’ll add small things I find as the year goes by. Then I’ll forget and have more surprises in December!
Happy new year Kate, to you, Tom, Bob and Bran and the whole KDD team!

You too, V!
Thank you for your hard work and inspiration. I have LOVED all of your projects this year (and am still deeply immersed in Colour Compass, although I am applying my colour mixing to one of your earlier designs).
Good luck for the year ahead both creatively and health wise. I am excited to see what you create (and help us to create).
