We had to say goodbye to Bruce yesterday.

His mobility had declined in recent months, but we had no idea that he was suffering from a rapidly progressing tumour that was pressing on his heart: just a few days ago, he was walking with us, as usual, out on the West Highland Way. When he became ill on Tuesday evening, it was obvious something was very seriously wrong. Tom and I were both with him when he died, and all I can say about this is, that, whether you are dog or human, to leave this world, in the company of those you love, after a very short period of suffering, seems as good a way as any.

Those of you who have read this blog for many years will know just how much Bruce meant to us and how devastated we are. Tom and I are going to take a few days for ourselves (which means there will be a hiatus in club proceedings until Monday). Thanks for understanding.

    Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your longtime companion, Bruce. It’s so hard to lose someone who has been such an integral part of your daily life for years. It’s clear he was very very well loved (as all good dogs should be). Please be gentle with yourselves.

    I am so sorry to read this loss of Bruce, I loved his posts and connected with your love for him. We lost our beloved Dougal, not too long ago. I found that I was depressed throughout the fall from his loss. Please give yourselves time to honor and grieve him. And do enjoy your other two four legged companions, even though Bruce cannot be replaced.

    Dear Kate and Tom, so sorry to read this. Very sad times. Know you have been blessed to have been there at the end and that Bruce passed on knowing he was loved and cherished. I recently had to make that awful decision for my little cat Tinkerbelle as well and have just said to my boys that it is rare to be there when our friends pass over. It is a true gift when they pass away peacefully and quickly at home with those they love. Bruce will always be with you in spirit, just not in visible body. My condolences and love. Jenni xx

    I’m so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed his adventures. They lifted my spirits whenever I felt down. We are going through something similar with our oldest cat though she has a chronic issue so it has been a long process. A good life and short suffering seems a good way to transition over. Bruce will always be with you. Energy never leaves. Nor does love.

    Really sorry to hear Bruce has departed you have loads of memories and that’s what you have to hold onto. On 11 November I had to put my Lexi a staffie/lab down she was nearly 14 had never been ill. She had spinal degeneration and was quite unable to walk and no body function control. It came on so suddenly so I had make that awful decision to put her down I was with her and I cried buckets. I still have an 11-year old part Shar-Pei but I will need to get a female friend for him although he seems to be content enough but he did have Lexi with him always. We’re all thinking of you both 😘

    Oh my! 😢Your mutual love knew endless depth & your sorrow and longing to hold his furry little face in your hands & look into his soulful, knowing eyes will be immense. You shared so much & he knew & loved you so well. Parts of you & Tom and his brothers, Bob & Bran, have traveled through the ether with him to the Great Beyond & there will reside with him forever. He is now with his feline brother, Jesus. Those two furry fellows are no doubt glad of their renewed furry companionship. That is small consolation at this time, when you are missing him to the tune of the vastness of the universe. I sense that he will continue to communicate with you, and you with he. Your relationship has migrated to another dimension & he will live in your hearts forevermore.

    Bruce’s gentle humor has made me smile so often over the years. I will continue to take comfort in his wisdom. Having recently lost my sweet canine companion of 14 years, all I can say is each day you get through without him is a day you have gotten through. And its ok to find joy in the antics of your two other rambunctious pups. They wont replace him, but you wouldn’t want that anyway.

    I’m so very sorry. My husband and I lost our beloved border collie, Saja, in January 2020. Making the call to the vet to schedule her last appointment and end her suffering remains the hardest conversation I’ve ever had. Sending healing thoughts to you and Tom.     I am in a day-to-day end of life journey with an ailing and cognitively impaired old dog. I dread having to make the decision and be without her.

Anyone who has followed your writing and photos over the years will have understanding of what a profound loss Bruce is to you, and all of us who have lost animal companions will recognise the devastation. He was a very special dog who enriched the lives of so many beyond his family circle. Hugs, will be thinking of you. Bruce had a wonderful life with you, and being with those he loved and who cared so well for him right up to the end is as you say as good a way to go as many of us can hope for.
