preparations

Hello! How are these early days of the year going for you? Here, we’ve had some snow . . .

We have the feeders well stocked for our feathered friends . .

. . . and are keeping an eye out for our woolly pals in the field opposite.

This bold brown-fleeced guy is a particular friend of our dogs (yes, really) who, of course, all love the snow . . .

And with the right footwear, I enjoy it too. There are plenty of walkers out and about, including this guy, making an intrepid, snowy ascent of Dumgoyne.

We are also very busy, here, behind the scenes. Sign-ups for Argyll’s Secret Coast closed just yesterday, and there’s now a fair bit of admin to do before the club is able to begin. For example, we need to factor in several days for validation checks on emails and postal addresses (you’d be surprised how often a single mis-keyed letter messes something up!) before building the distribution lists for the club material.

This is a project with a lot of moving parts, and it’s important that we prepare well, to ensure that everything runs smoothly. So, if you’ve signed up for the club, and are more than ready for things to get going, here’s how they are set to pan out over the next week or so: on January 14th, you’ll get a welcome message, together with your discount code and all essential club information; on the 16th, you’ll receive the club’s first essay, introducing the area of Argyll we will be exploring together with the club’s key themes (there will also be a special recipe); and the first pattern will land in your inboxes on the 21st.

We spent much of last week in Argyll, working on some club photography and a short film. These activities have made me rather impatient to show you my first pattern from this collection, shot in a truly extraordinary location. But I can’t say more than that just yet!

We and our friends have been hard at work for several months researching and writing, designing and knitting, walking and kayaking, photographing and cooking, preparing everything to be ready to explore Argyll’s Secret Coast with you. We are thrilled that so many of you are keen to join us (this has proved to be a very popular club!) and we are all really excited for our Argyll journey to begin . . . . . Until then . . .

  1. Bonjour Kate,
    Magnifique 😍
Je commence l’année à la réalisation du joli cardigan Evendoon. Il fait froid dans les Landes où j’habite, un temps idéal pour le tricot !!! Bonne année douce, chaleureuse et généreuse !

Fabulous snowy images. I try to get away to real winter weather at least every other year and am currently in Red Lodge Montana, a village in the foothills where snow is on the ground and the sun is shining.

I spent a week in Argyll in ‘18 with wilderness Scotland, enjoyed everything. It whetted my appetite to see the northernmost islands.

Oh how I‘d have loved to have joined, but I was too busy to even check my emails and I missed it. Have fun everyone!

Thank you for sharing the photo of the moon. I was observing a similar sliver of the moon this weekend here on the other side of the Atlantic. It’s interesting to see the difference in angle from where I sit and it so nice to see think of how we are all looking at the same moon in our separate places in the world, mine not being any thing like the secret coast you will be sharing with us through these club activities.

Kate, this may give you a laugh. My son was explaining to his half Taiwanese daughter that she has a very Irish great grandfather on her dad’s side. He also mentioned that my dad loved playing the fiddle. She asked, “Is that the upside down chair thing?

Hello Kate and happy new year!
I really look forward to this club, to learn more about your fjords (as we call it here in Norway) and looking with excitement forward to your new patterns. Don´t know if I will get time to knit, because I am going to embroider a folk costume ( norwegian bunad) for my granddaughter this year. But I know I will enjoy this club :-)

    1. you are right – they *are* fjords, Anne Jorid! I often think about the similarities (and there’s actually a week when we’ll discuss these in the club). I hope you will share photos of the bunad, when finished.

A Happy 2022 Kate, Tom, pups and your wonderful team.
So looking forward to the new club, have enjoyed every one of them, every facet.
Being geographically as far away from Scotland (Australia) as possible makes it even more exciting!

Thank you very much for your careful preparations, and thoughtfulness to include the schedule for all of us. I’m treating the club as a virtual vacation, and have greatly enjoyed the photos and essays that have preceded the launch.

Thanks for the “tease”. I can’t wait to get started!

  16. I may be the slowest knitter to sign up for this club but, knowing how beautiful your designs are, I can’t wait to see them and enjoy learning more about Argyll. I don’t enjoy pressure so will be revelling in the processes rather than, necessarily, the results!

    1. this is a club all about enjoying yourself, and taking your time, with zero pressure!

Add me to the group of those regretting our delay in signing up. Big snows kept me away from the computer. Any chance you would let us sign in?

LOVE the photos!! I am soooo excited for this club!
I always love your clubs—–the journeys—-knitting and geographical that
they take me on. This one feels extra special……months on lockdown and away
    from so many.
    Can’t wait to begin!

  19. Doggers! That picture is one for the ages and I too am looking foreward to your next book. Thank you for all the hard work you and Tom do. Happy New Year and be good to yourselves. Oh and my daughter gave me the Nora Gaugan book for Christmas and am twisting my wee brain around these stitches :)

This is the first time I’ve joined a knitting club so I’m excited. A positive start to 2022 full of fun, creativity, adventure and Hope!!!

    1. absolutely!

  21. Looking forward to the club. Thank you all for putting in so much hard work, specially over the Holiday period.

Alas, what you get as snow, we on the South Coast get as rain. Rain. And. Yet. More. Rain! Ah well, at least now that we’re retired we get to choose when we go out!

  22. Just the thing I needed to read and see this morning after a week of Covid-related madness. I’ll be waiting for next Friday with bated breath!

Happy New Year Kate and thanks for this post and lovely snowy pics. Here in the SW of Scotland we have had no snow but are just getting a wee bit fed up of gale force winds. I’m very much looking forward to this club as Argyll is an area I have come to know and love over the past few years. I grew up in Largs, across the Clyde, and although I have explored many areas of Scotland, I didn’t know Argyll very well until relatively recently.

Ooh! Here’s another in soggy Staffordshire!!! We did have snow, but, I blinked and it was gone…..
Preparations? Polished my boots, checked my rucsac, shook out the waterproofs…..oh! No!!!
Wrong preps…..he! Also, trying to finish some WIPS, and do some essential housework (yawn) – I do get distracted soooo easily………all in readiness to welcome Argyll….oops! A thought…..maybe I could take a short break there……
Thanks Kate, the anticipation is definitely building here 🙃

A happy, healthy and fullfilling New Year to you and yours.
I’m so excited. I think I know Argyll pretty well, for someone who has never lived there but has holidayed there often, specifically Tarbert and Islay, so I’m looking forward to learning more about this beautiful area. And, it goes without saying, looking forward to your new patterns.

Is it too late to join the club??? Christmas was so busy and I didn’t realize the time. My family came from the argyle area. Cambelton to be exact.

  33. So excited about the club! Looking forward to the the 14th :-)
Thank you for the great photos, too.

I envy you your snow. We just have rain in Staffordshire and a lawn doing a mean impersonation of a sodden sponge. The boys look very handsome and hasn’t Bran grown. Interesting that from Bruce’s viewpoint he is much calmer than Bobby and yet they are the same genetics. Take care
