We seem to be in the middle of a fairly sustained cold snap in our part of Scotland. Icy days have been followed by snowy ones, with bitter temperatures and freezing fog. I personally like quite chilly weather, and particularly enjoy its transformative effect on my surrounding landscape. During a cold spell, everything starts to look quite different, and rapidly changing light and visibility often prompt me to regard many familiar things anew. And certainly, a long walk is a good way to stay warm! As long as I have cosy layers, sturdy boots, and a decent set of crampons, I’m away.

Here are some photos from the past few days walking, in the cold.

    Glorious snow! Do you ever see sundogs in Scotland? Light and sound, both, used to feel strangely transformed in the extreme cold of the far north when I lived in Minnesota. (I’m now back to the pelting rain of Pacific Northwest winters, so our seasonal excitement consists of checking to see if the sump pump is working properly!) Many thanks for these reminders of another climate’s winter beauty.

    Yes, that freezing fog is gorgeous, as are all the other photos. However, I do not see Bruce with you, only Bobby. I hope he is well, perhaps not steady on his feet in icy weather?

    As hazardous as it is for roads and driving, I too love walking in the freezing fog and my dogs don’t mind, they are wearing fur coats after all!! Beautiful pictures.

    Thank you Kate and Tom for your beautiful pictures. It reminded me to be quiet and observe the truly magnificence of winter.
    The Northwestern part of the states indeed has stunning scenery. We are a bit warmer and a bit wetter with rain drops falling, not ice drops. No matter what Mother Nature offers, it’s a gift to be a part of her landscape!

    Photographs of you modelling your knits and walking with your dogs just make me want to get outside and explore and look at nature more closely. I have just finished reading Melissa Harrison’s Nature Diary which does the same. The natural world is so precious and it is people like you and Melissa that make me want to protect and care for it.

    The photos are beautiful. Tom has the eye.. You’ve inspired me to get out more when it snows. I live in Colorado, USA, and this time of year, we start getting our first snows. I believe it isn’t as cold here as where you are because of the humidity. Soon we will start our real snowy season and even with the pandemic, the ski slopes will thrive. Sorry I’m too old to learn that. However, I do plan to get snow shoes for when it gets deep. I have a wonderful warm coat and usually wear wool underwear and a couple of pairs of pants and boots. Any other suggestions?

    So beautiful – the freezing fog on Carbeth Loch is particularly stunning to me. Winter seems under appreciated too often, and this year I am really learning to see and praise its unique beauty. Mary Oliver is helping me in this…

    Oh, Kate, what a joy to get a glimpse of your lovely environs. I share your joy at winter for all the reasons you say, and of course because it makes me feel tough and capable to swaddle myself in wool creations to beat the cold. Can we take a moment to celebrate the lab company, too? Mine is the most durable source of joy, as are yours, clearly. How do they manage the cold so brilliantly, with never a pause in the canine grins?
