help me choose buttons

Hello! Today I’m putting the finishing touches to a new cardigan which (all being well) I’ll be able to show you on Friday. I have spent the past hour or so poking around the button box . . . with some success, and a wee bit of frustration. I fear my button-vision may no longer be objective, and so I need your opinion. And although I find the set above, with their hands permanently set at 12.15, extremely pleasing, sadly there are only 6 of them, while this cardigan has 9 button holes, so they cannot be used . . .

Again, there’s only 6 in this old formica-like set, which is definitely something of a shame. . . .

I like these blue buttons, but fear they might limit my wearing options. Would these buttons mean my cardigan always had to be paired with something blue?

These wood buttons are . . . ok, but in comparison to the clocks, they just don’t make me that enthusiastic.

and although I rather enjoy the marmalade transparency of these buttons I feel the yellows of yarn and buttons may be competing.

These tiny yellow ones match the fabric of the buttonband quite well . . .

. . . but I think overall that these glass ones are my favourite . . . that said, my opinion may well be skewed by the fact that it took me about half an hour’s poking around the button mountain to dig out 9, and they now feel rather precious. Does the fact that I know that these are the only 9 small, glass buttons of this type in my possession make me want to use them a little bit more?

What do you think? Which buttons should I use? Glass buttons, tiny yellow buttons, wood buttons, or marmalade-yellow buttons?

    Please help pass the word about this year’s Shetland Wool Week along. Having had to cancel two years in a row the knitters and wool folk of the Shetland Islands have done an extraordinary job of creating an amazing alternative. They deserve, and have more than earned, immense credit for what they have accomplished. They are also asking for a smallish donation in lieu of actually receiving fees and income from those of us who might have been attending in person.     I’m sure it’s much too late to be commenting now as you will have already decided.. I love the little yellow ones , so self contained and tiny. The blue are striking though and I think their openness, having spokes as it were, make them more accessible, less clunky so more wearable. What have you chosen? .. I’ll read onto your next post to see! 😊

    I like the glass buttons best but they do look a tiny bit formal and may not match the feel of the overall cardigan. Next, I like the tiny yellow buttons. So Sunny! The blue ones seem so dark…

    I love the blue ones, and I don’t think they limit what you can wear it with. If those are out, though, I lean towards tiny yellow buttons. Thanks for letting us play along! :)

    Well, be careful what you ask…I love the blue too! And just like I don’t limit what color I wear with blue jeans, you won’t have to limit what you wear with this yellow sweater because of blue buttons either.

    That said, the heart wants what the heart wants, so if we see glass buttons on this we’ll still love it!

    Fun to get to vote–thanks, Kate!

    I hate to be the proverbial fly in the ointment, but I wasn’t smitten with any of the options. All the yellows felt just shy of right in terms of color, and the others all felt distracting. My initial reaction was most positive for the blue–embrace the distraction! But I wonder if a softer blue might please me even more?

    I like the blue buttons best, but then on my screen they look more black than blue. And of course if you decide you don’t like them you can always swap them for different ones later! My only concern would be how colour-fast they are

    Looks like the blue has the most votes. Check Etsy for Clock-face buttons. They have some that look like the ones you have. They are wooden, and it’s hard to tell from my monitor, they may be more ‘used’ than yours? I would definitely vote for the clock faces as my first choice (because I think you could find some more) and blue as option #2. The last time you posted about buttons I did go on Etsy and buy some – crazy buttons with motorcycles that reminded me of a photo of my mom when she was young. Which is to say, it can be dangerous to go looking – but they actually have some mis-matched clock-faced buttons (almost look like advertising?) . . . If I had knit a beautiful golden-yellow cardigan, those are the ones I would choose because they would be so much fun.

    Love the blue! With that little yellow fleck they’re just made for it. But you have to wear it so go with the clear if that’s where your heart sings.

    Choosing buttons has to be the hardest thing about knitting. That said the “clocks” are gorgeous but I would probably go for the blue ones.
    If all else fails you could always jump online & find some new buttons.

    The blue set are the ones that catch my eye! I don’t love any of the others. Except the clocks which are awesome. Has the internet hive mind found a way to find three more vintage clock buttons?

    The clocks are marvelous! I agree they’re worthy of a project designed specifically for them.

    The blue are my favorite choice with the yellow of this project- their intricate patterning just feels right when laid on the fabric, and the colors complement instead of competing. The blue seems dark enough in the photos that it shouldn’t dictate any other colors you might pair the item with.

    I think the ideas for using a mix of buttons really depends on the sweater design, and even with the little we see here, I don’t get that kind of a vibe from this project.

    I really like the blue if you want to shift the emphasis from the colour of the cardigan to the colour of the buttons. To make the most of the yellow wool I think the marmalade ones are best – enough difference, interesting in themselves, and not taking away from the yellow. The wooden ones are a bit meh, and the small yellow ones seem too small against the size of the band.

    It seems the pretty blue buttons are winning in their appeal but your explanation of your wardrobe limitations with that choice has me saying go with the little yellow ones. They are cheery, match so well and that way you can knit another piece or three for the blue, glass and clock buttons making those knits extra special ;)

    Love diving into my Granny’s buttons every now and again, just to look at them even though I may not be on an immediate search for buttons. :)

    Frankly, I like the blue buttons. They really set off from the yellow. Also, I find dark blue to be something of a neutral. In my opinion any color that goes with bright yellow will also go with dark blue.

    I like the blue ones best, followed by the glass ones. I don’t think the blue ones limit you to always wearing it with blue any more than wearing blue jeans limits you to always wearing a blue top. Plus i like the contrast better than the other, more plain ones.

    Go with marmalade or tiny yellow. The glass buttons are nice, but I don’t think they work that well with this yarn.

    Marmalade! The blue jumps out too much. It looks good in a photo at that scale but on a cardigan the blue buttons would be too fussy. I like the formica too, but since there are only six of those, go for marmalade.

    I like the tiny yellow. The sweater will then be the star, no competing with the button. I do also like the blue and the clear glass. The other question is what shape looks best with the silhouette of the sweater, which we can’t see.

    Looks like BLUE is leading the vote count! I agree. I don’t think there’s any problem wearing it with other colors. It just looks like a dark neutral, but really makes a statement against that sunny yellow!

    I’m on team glass! The glass are beautiful and don’t clash or fight with the yellow. Wood would be my second choice.

    I actually like the flowery blue buttons. I’m a jeans kind of gal, so maybe that’s why I’m leaning that way. I do like the glass ones too. But I’m a practical sort, so I’d pick something I would be less likely to break or chip. Good luck.

    I would go for the blue. On my screen they are close to black, definitely a neutral colour so you just notice the shape. Second choice would be to alternate the clocks with the tiny yellow, but that would leave one solitary leftover clock.

    I vote for the blue ones. They even have their own specks which almost match those of the yarn. Blue is a neutral in my eyes and you are “allowed” to wear more than two colours at one time ;-)

    If just one uniform set, I’d go for the blue, though the clocks are great; if you had enough clocks it’d be hard to choose between them! As far as a mixy-matchy oddment set of buttons, unless the focus of the cardigan is to be the buttons, I wouldn’t go for a mismatched collection. All of the other buttons are kind of meh to me, though the glass ones do look classic.

    Well my favorites are the clock face buttons, but, alas, too few. My second choice is the dark blue set. I don’t think they would limit your pairing choices; the buttons have more than one color. For some odd reason I thought of Dorset buttons when I saw the picture. As I learned how to make these from you, it seems the perfect choice.

    it is a little hard to choose buttons without knowing what the rest of the cardigan looks like – i assume it is all yellow, but how much structure is there on it? cables that should get all the attention or a more subtle structure?

    just looking at the band and the buttons – i would go for the blue with yellow ones. i did not realize they were blue till you pointed it out.

    but, if you want to have the buttons just complement the rest of the garment, a more subtle one is needed, such as the glass (but it would be my last choice, as i love the blues!).

    My 2 cents….Love the blue and the clocks. I checked the Etsy shop listed above and they have some cool buttons, especially the owls…..Reminded me of your logo! I have a button collection too, lots of memories in that box.

    I’m not sure the blue buttons would work for you because you are meticulous in your styling and I think the ‘ are the blue buttons getting in the way of this combination’ q. would be an unwanted distraction. I would go for the clocks interspersed with whatever works best of the others. Hope that helps, I look forward to seeing the final creation.

    I’m sorry to disagree with everyone but I like the clock buttons. I like my sweaters to be different, and my own making. So if I had a choice I would take the clocks. They are unique. They speak to the person I am. Different from all others. Linda

    On my first wearable weaving project, I chose some unique buttons. Every time I wore the jacket, people said “nice buttons” without paying any attention to the fabric. From that I learned that I prefer buttons that are more organic to the garment, not contrasting. In this case, I like the marmalade buttons the best. I would have gone for the small bright yellow, but thy look too small.

    My favourites? Definitely clear or the blue… I don’t think the blue buttons would limit your colour choice of outfit,,, I think they really enhance that yellow. Love the clear too!

    Hi Kate. My vote goes to the blue buttons. They add contrast and interest and I don’t think they need to match exactly with your other clothes unless you are working in a corporate textile situation. It’s good to have individualised buttons. The wee glass ones are beautiful but I feel a bit lost against the deep colour. They would sing on something paler or more delicate – like the beaded Christmas tree yoke design you made in Yokes. I have been finding joy in using 3 lots of buttons from my late friend’s button box, which her family shared with me. It is lovely to have them on my new and newly completed projects. Button box treasure is priceless. Enjoy your cardigan and I look forward to the reveal soon.

    I agree with tiny yellow or blue. First pick being tiny yellow, though I despise having buttons which are too small for their holes. I like the blue very much, though to me they would be a tiny bit limiting… I have dark brown buttons on a chartreuse green sweater though, and they don’t seem to be limiting. There’s always the brown of my hair to coordinate. The glass ones are nice too.

    I think you will find that you can use blue, which is more interesting, and not have to worry about what you wear with it. The buttons make their own statement without having to be “matchy-matchy” with the rest of your outfit.

    I am inherited my grandmother’s button collection. I have often used 7 different buttons on the same sweater and love the variety. I would tend to choose the clock buttons with something similar or maybe even different by comparison to accentuate your choice of the clocks. They’re whimsical and appear to be your heart’s choice.       I like this idea too… otherwise, partial to wood buttons in general or the blue ones. the tiny yellow ones are, well, tiny and not sure they would suit a cardigan.

    I really like the way the marmalade buttons blend with the fabric but also glint and draw the eye a bit in their own way :-)

    I’m a huge fan of the BLUE, especially because they look nearly black. Second choice would be tiny yellow. The transparent ones don’t do a thing for me… (sorry!) I envy you your button mountain!

    Oh, please, the clocks. You will smile every time you look in the mirror. The others are interesting but not fun. I put glass roses on a red sweater thinking they would look like red roses and they just looked dreadful.

    Completely different suggestion to change it all up:

    Question: Why do they all need to be the same?
    1. The clock buttons (6) and for the 3 remaining use any of the others that you have set out for consideration – you would need to actually sit them together to see which other button would be pared the best.
    2. 3 clock buttons and one of each of the others. It would be fun then to decide the order after the 3 clock buttons are at the top, middle and bottom.
    3. 5 clock buttons and 4 blue buttons, alternating, beginning with the clock.
    4. 1 clock button at the very top and the balance 8 buttons in either the clear buttons or the blue.
    5. Lastly, 3 clock buttons starting at the top and in order on down, and then one of the yellow sets. Don’t love the wooden buttons with this but perhaps the woods would pare well with the clock buttons to maintain a consistent tone.

    I am sure that once you got playing in this arena, there would open up many more configurations.

    The Clocks, for sure and the Marmalade for fillers. The clocks are fabulous so you could just use one clock at the neck and do the rest in the bright yellow…The simpler the sweater the more interesting the buttons can be.

    absolutely the blue, i love them and the contrast! Maybe its my screen, but I think they’re dark enough blue that it won’t limit your wearability

    Here’s my two cents’ worth. Love the blue buttons, but for me the contrast with the fabric will make the sweater all about the buttons. The small yellow ones disappear against the yarn. The glass ones would be my choice. They neither detract form the sweater nor disappear completely.

    Definitely the blue if you can find 9. To me they are perfect and shouldn’t be discounted because you feel you may then have to wear something blue – you won’t because those buttons just look like they’re meant to be on that cardigan and you’ll therefore wear it because it’s an item of beauty and won’t need matching with anything. Having said that, the yellow will look fab with a spot of denim. Second choice would be the clear glass but they don’t do anything for the cardigan nor does the cardigan show off the beauty of the buttons…. just my take!

    Perhaps Dorset buttons might be a consideration? The Dorset’s texture would add interest but the yarn color would “blend” and thus expand companion dressing choices….Just a thought.

    The order in which they are shown is interesting and indicative (perhaps) of the individual choice) — at least Kate”s personal choice.     The clock buttons are really special and I love them best.   You could space them out with a couple of buttons with a complementary color.   They look very “professional” as if they are for a work environment.   The next lot — deep yellow evoke spring and summer garments which are light in tone and they could be stretched with some other complementary buttons.   I think I like the blue one best because they present some contrast.   Most of the rest (particularly those pedestrian wood ones) don’t interest me in the slightest…………..

    Hands down: blue!!! And a distant 2nd: glass. Blue is neutral and won’t ever limit your fashion choices! (Glass is very pretty but gets lost on yellow, might do better and sparkle more on a darker color — so save them for a starring role somewhere else.)

    The blue ones are the best choice, by far. The clock ones are nice, but not for this garment as they are too fussy given the fact you already have a twisted rib button band with flecks. The glass ones look plasticky , and the rest are either the wrong colour or too small. The blue ones lift the garment somehow. But maybe shock horror you should buy some new buttons!

    Definitely clocks and glass. Do not like the blue, but that is my least favorite color. However, I would do a very thorough search for more clocks, perhaps contacting anyone you know who might know where [else] to search. The clocks are sublime and perfect for the cardigan.
    No doubt in your choice you have considered the ease of buttoning and unbuttoning, if like me you are doing this often when wearing a cardigan

I liked them but not on that cardigan, loved the clocks and would probably choose the Marmalade though would take your word that in reality the yellows don’t work. So glass it is.

    What a wondeful dilemma! My vote is for the glass – you need nine and you only have nine of them, that’s rather serendipitous! But those blue are fabulous too (and I’m pretty sure I have some of them in my button box, so if you need an extra one shout!) and would go with clothes blue and red and orange and even green. Oh dear, it seems I’m being no help at all!

    The dark blue really pop without detracting from the golden background. I disagree that they would limit your outfit choices. A bright yellow sweater is not for hiding within, so the wardrobe consideration would focus on what goes well with sunshine yellow, not what pairs with blue. Anyhow, by now you have so many lovely cardigans and pullovers your day might already be slowed dow selecting an outfit.

    My immediate reaction was that I loved the marmalade ones, which don’t seem to appeal to anyone else, but they were closely followed by the blue. I loved the way that they form little yellow flowers through the cut-outs. I definitely wouldn’t go for the glass, but without seeing the whole garment it’s more difficult to form an opinion on the look. As for the blue limiting your outfit options, I think that’s a very constraining way to dress. There are no limits!

      I really like the little yellow ones – they are more subtle. The blue are striking But I think they may take your eye away from the cardigan itself. I’m not as fond of the glass as I don’t think they add to the garment. But whatever you choose I’m sure it will be wonderful.

    Definitively blue! They are dark enough that they read black but they just set off the brightness of the yellow. Now it also depends on the style of the sweater. I tend to wear my sweaters oversize so the blue would be great on that type of sweater. However, a tighter fitting sweater might call for something more demure like the glass or small yellow buttons.

    I don’t suppose you would be willing to alternate? Say, the clocks and the wood buttons?

    If not, then I would say the blue (adding a contrast colorway), or the wood or the tiny yellows (tonal options) would give the most flexibility in terms of wearing choices. :)

    Hi, I would say the blue or the little yellow. I don’t feel the blue would limit your selection at all of what would go with it. I like the little yellow ones because I feel the loveliness of the yarn takes top billing.

    Of the final final four I would choose the small yellow buttons as with your choices you seem to be looking for something that blends.
    The others all stand out against the yellow of the sweater and somehow not in an eye pleasing way.

    My favorite are the blue although not because they are blue but they look like sunflowers (my favorite) and, as others have said, I don’t think it would limit what your pair with it. My second choice would be the wooden ones. I think the yellows and the glass one get “lost” in the yellow.

    Blue . Would go with most items I have seen you wear and they are interesting. The yellow ones would disappear from a distance. Glass ones are more delicate and may create a nice reflection. Depends on the style.

    I think the blue is dark enough that it could be paired with any range of dark colors–black,grey–it is the contrast that is important, IMO, and the clear glass or various yellows provides no contrast. But then, I am also not strict about everything matching: as I type, I am wearing a navy blue Carbeth cardigan with bright red buttons. My second choice would be the wooden buttons, since I think the brown-orange of the wood looks nice with the yellow. I do like the idea of pairing the clock buttons (my favorites) with others, but adding an uneven three offends my sense of symmetry. (Needless to say, you should immediately cast on something explicitly to feature those smashing clocks!) Looking forward to the finished product!

    Hm…
    Do you have some off-white or beige buttons in your button box you could match the clocks with? Five clocks and four complementing buttons from a different family – Marmelade might work, though maybe off-white or beige would be more pleasing.

    I personally love the blue buttons and I don’t think they would be limiting your garment choice, I rather think they would be nice accent, an accessoire to any outfit. Since the rest of the cardigan is still invisible to us at least that’s what I think now.

    Or nine orphans. Do you have single buttons you could bring together in the cardigan? I was thinking colours like that lovely necklace you’ve been wearing in an earlier post, so the carding becomes its own statement piece, jewellery included. Matching earrings, glued to the back of a post?

    Well, my favorites are the blue ones! I do not think having blue buttons will require you to wear blue (nor do I think they would preclude your ability to wear black) with the cardigan. After all, the tweedy yarn has flecks of blue in it!

    I would go with the blue….I am of the firm belief that one should not limit one’s colors..I love wearing 5 or more colors at a time (I do understand I a may be alone in that)…but the one thing I have learned in my life is of all things in this world to not be afraid of ….is color. Those blue buttons make the yellow pop!

    Blue buttons for sure !!! I don’t think they would limit your wearing options as they are quite a dark blue ( or atleast that is how they appear on my screen ). Also it seems to me that alot of the colors you wear are quite saturated so I don’t think it would be a problem. 😊

    I like the blue for the contrast. Love the clocks too but it depends if you’d always be twiddling with them to make sure the clock faces lay the right way! I recently had my own button dilemma – a friend sent me a selection, one set of which I chose and I would never have thought of those if they’d been in my button tin. Sometimes it helps to have a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 24th opinion !

    I do love buttons! It’s hard to choose based solely on the button band. Glass would be perfect for an elegant, classic cardigan, but the marmalade ones would suit something more like your Deco cardigan. I don’t think they clash and with four holes you could get a pattern with your thread.

    Love the blue buttons. There are specks of other colors and the contrast with the yellow is wonderful. I do not think it would stop you from wearing any colors you want. But then, why listen to me! I am the grandmother who never wears matching socks. My grandkids love it and one even started emulating me!

    Dear Kate, my favorites are definitely the blue ones. I would not worry about combinations with other garments. They will fit anyway, because they give your cardi the right kick. My second choice are the glass buttons, because they have a touch of extravagance. And of course I agree on the clock buttons. So sad, they are only six. You could knit something, that gives them a stage. ;-)

    Shame about the blue (if you’ll feel too restricted) and that there aren’t enough clocks. Unless you could face a mix I’d agree with you – the glass ones will disappear at a distance. So you’ll be free to choose. But those blue ones which will look black at a distance so could go with anything 🤔😉

    Oh exciting. Definitely not the marmalade or the plain wooden one (too tan-ey). The tiny yellow or the glass ones are good but if you’re minded to go for contrast then I really like the blue too. In the photo they look dark enough to not be too restrictive. Sometimes I think I make the wrong choice of a colour because I’m concerned about limiting options and then find that I gravitate to those options anyway. Roll on Friday for the yellow cardi reveal.

    I’m assuming the button holes are already done? The glass ones are lovely but putting blue buttons on your sweater doesn’t limit you to wearing certain colors with sweater. I think I’ve always been mismatched and asymmetrical and I would wear the sweater with any thing I wanted to, blue buttons and all!!
