Hello, it’s Tom here. The light has been returning and the days are gradually getting longer and I thought I’d pop in to let you know some news about my new exhibition, and to show you some of the photographs I’ve taken during the first few weeks of 2020.

In January we often see a lot of cold and snowy weather, but this year has been unusually wet and mild.

Even our hardy bovine neighbours are a little weary of the drookit days.

And the swans on Carbeth loch seem to really enjoy a rare, dry dawn.

But whatever the weather, in this part of Scotland, there’s always some light to be enjoyed.

Over the past few months, Kate and I have particularly been enjoying the light and landscape of the Cowal peninsula – one of our favourite parts of Argyll.

We’ve been walking, taking photographs, and doing lots of research

the dogs really love this part of the world as well

We’ve been spending a lot of time in Cowal because next month, both Kate and I will be participating in the Write by the Sea festival.

Kate will be reading from some new work alongside talks and workshops from other local authors like Mallachy Tallack and Mandy Haggith. I’m also really pleased to say that, the same weekend as the festival I’ll be opening my first solo exhibition at the Tighnabruaich gallery.

The name of my exhibition is – appropriately – Light by the Sea. Following on from my Latitude project, the images in the exhibition use light and colour to develop a specific and immediately recognisable sense of place that’s a little different from traditional landscape photography.

If you’d like to join Kate and myself for what looks like a fantastic weekend in Tighnabruaich, you’ll find more information and tickets for the festival here.

Tom, I have always loved your photos. I have always found the light at the end of January to be exceptional. There is a brightness and yet softness about it. I would always try to visit friends in Ireland, West and North, at this time of year. My favourite time to photograph.
