This is a very busy time of year for me.
But however busy I am, somehow the knitting never stops.

So in the interstices of putting together the West Highland Way book, I’ve also been whipping up a Carbeth cardigan.

I created the cardigan along the same general principles as the jumper: two strands of Buachaille held together, a wide cropped shape, a yoke defined by the graphic angle of its modified raglan shaping . . .

. . . and a straight-cut boat-ish neck, finished with a deep, ribbed collar.

Rather than being rolled, here the collar is turned to the inside and joined (using a nifty seam-free technique).

I-cord edging and buttonholes lend a sleek finish to the front openings.

In fact, I’d say this cardigan is all about the finishing details.

The techniques involved aren’t difficult, and they really make a difference to the garment’s overall look.

Lending the cardigan a neat, almost tailored appearance – it’s basically a warm spring jacket.

It definitely didn’t feel like Spring at first light yesterday morning when we shot these photos.

But this combination of matelot stripes with my yellow Carbeth Cardi still puts me in a jolly springtime mood!

If you’d like to knit your own Carbeth Cardigan, the pattern is now available on Ravelry and kits are in the shop. West Highland Way club members receive a 50% discount on the pattern (watch your inboxes for the coupon!)

Happy knitting! Roll on Spring!

Hi! I’m just starting a Carbeth cardigan! But I’m having trouble with the guage swatch… I bought yarn in a size 5: bulky, and knitted it with a size 6.5mm needle but the length is coming out longer than the 4″ it should be… I tried sizing down to a 6mm and. 5.5mm but it’s still a bit long. Please help!!
Hi! I am enjoying your West Highland Way Club so much — the patterns, stories and photographs are wonderful! I have been waiting on my Carbeth Cardigan 50 percent off coupon to purchase the cardigan pattern, however, I have not yet seen it in my inbox. Please send this to me so that I can purchase the pattern. I hate to see this club come to an end — I look forward to my weekly Scottish adventure. Thank you. Mechele MacDonald

Hi Mechele – can you email us at info@katedaviesdesigns.com so we can sort this out for you?
Dear people, would you please send me the code for buying the carbeth cardigan as a member of the West HWay? Thank you, I could not find it and want to knit that beauty….. Happy EYF!!!!
Hi Margarita – if you are having trouble locating your code, just email us at info@katedaviesdesigns.com and we can sort you out
I saw your report on the horrible bleeding buttons. I recommend dyeing the whole sweater a darker shade. My husband had a white cabled sweater that he said looked like “a girl sweater.” He wanted me to dye it blue. Having no experience in dyeing I put the sweater in the pot without making sure the dye was fully dissolved and got an ugly, patchy job–much worse than bleeding buttons. My husband is better than I at following directions. He got two packages of a darker blue dye and, following directions and fully dissolving the dye, successfully covered up the uneven blue. So I am sure that you could cover up the smeared button bands. Just read the instructions first!
Dear Kate,
Just read about your “bleeding buttons” (more than one meaning there, I’m sure).
What to do with the Carbeth 5? Over dye!
Hi kate,
Nice Photoshoot!
Fab cardigan. I love your photoshoots ❤
I think I love the cardigan even more than the jumper. Thank you for such a lovely pair of patterns. x
Hi Kate
I love your designs and enjoy reading your blog. Could you tell me where you get your head wraps from they look so lovely. I’m really looking forward to reading your new book
Super-cute. I love how you are wearing your warm snow-boots with it. That’s spring, right? We want the spring colors, but we still need to keep warm.
Going on the to knit list immediately!
I don’t typically like wearing cardigans. But, I do favor a cropped or slightly longer length rather
than a l-o-n-g garment. But, isn’t this the beauty of making our own garments? We get to choose.
Nice work, Kate. It’s an interesting twist on an already interesting design.
I’m nearly finish the jumper version so this will be next on my needles. I hope that I look half as lovely as you look in it. Where did you get the buttons please Kate?
What a great update……..this Cardi is so perfect. Got the pattern………of course!! Thank you for keeping your fingers and brain BUSY! You look great.
It is gorgeous!
Love, love, love it Kate! It looks gorgeous both open and closed. Unsure whether to go up a size this time to get more swing at the back. Decisions, decisions. Thanks for another fab pattern xxx
Hi Kate
I love your designs and can’t wait to purchase your boook
Do you have a pattern for the
Head wraps you are often seen wearing in
The photos of your garments?
Thanks
Jo
Dear Kate, I’m about half way through the pullover with the Mason Dixon KAL. I was attracted to it immediately and was so happy when you rushed to get it online. Now the cardigan–it’s even better! I will be getting a kit as soon as I scrape pennies from the piggy bank. I think the gold-yellow is perfect. And by the way, I LOVE your glasses–you are so elegant.
I love it! I love the whole look of your outfit too! So cute! Already bought my pattern and thinking I need a bright spring color too! Oh, how I wish I could wear that golden yellow color…oh, well! It looks great on you! Thanks for another great pattern Kate!

I just cannot stand how adorable you are!!!! You never fail to drop my mouth wide open with these stunning photos featuring your gorgeous deigns and your classically timeless style that seems simultaneously so effortless and perfectly choreographed. Just jaw droppingly beautiful!! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us. AND you’re so cute in your glasses :)
Love the cardigan! I like the jumper but didn’t think it would look good on my “mature” body.
You are just so smart. What a beautiful set of pictures and what a great cardi.
Your cardi is beautiful, I am spinning yarn for my fall carfi and it is of similar colour!
Thank you so much for putting out the pattern for this Carbeth Cardi!!! I love the Carbeth design but hesitated doing yet another pullover. I even purchased the lovely Hedder color yarn to make it, but hesitated. Now, I’m glad I did because this cardi will be on my needles within the week!! THANK YOU!!!!
P.S. You look adorable in your glasses. They give you a different look….even younger!
Love it! And you look positively adorable in your glasses.
This cardi is too much of wonderful! Thanks!!
Thank you Kate for all your lovely patterns. Not a Highland Club member so anxiously awaiting the book. Always something new to learn and you do that to perfection. God bless
These are beautiful pics Kate. Love the cardi. I’m a cardi kind of girl rather than sweater. Is the cardi as wide at the bottom as the jumper? I like the width of the jumper. Trying to think how I can get this modern type shape into a Shetland yoke cardi I need to reek it that’s 45years old🤔
Oh just how I imagined it! Perfect and thank you 😘
Is there a trick I don’t know about for the SSK? Mine look messy! Both sides of your cardi are perfect as was the jumper, which I’ve finished.
Hi Elaine, yes, there is a trick. The Mason-Dixon ladies covered it on their blog last week during their Carbeth knitalong. Here is the link: https://www.masondixonknitting.com/carbeth-3-fixes-problems-may/
Thanks so much!! I did see it but don’t do Facebook. I think there is audio in the background so I’ll try to AST least listen to it. Thanks again.
I don’t do FB either but had no problem accessing the link that was posted on MDK.
See the video by Patty Lyons for a brilliant way to tidy the look of SSK. It was referenced on the Mason Dixon blog last week.
Love this one! Thank you, Kate. I swatched already for Carbeth but when Kate mentioned developing a cardigan version I decided to hold off as I enjoy wearing cardigans. Bought the pattern and now all I need is more knitting time. Never enough hours in the day!
Almost done with Catbeth#1 and hankering for the card I already. Love that look! Brilliant, as always.
Sorry about iPhone autocorrect—I mean “hankering for the cardi”—of course.
I’ve knitted 2 Carbeths (see my insta-feed joatvillagewoolly for pictures) – and would love to knit a cardigan version too – any chance of an add-on/supplement sort of thing for those who already have the original? Obviously I could make one up (I think) but I suspect that your version would be better than mine ; ).
Simply gorgeous and you are so talented. You model your knitwear so well.xx
I love this pattern and you have shown it beautifully. I don’t look good in a cropped length though. Do you think I could add another 10-15cm to the length?
Kate, i thnik i love all your patterns ! each week, it’s another beautifull one ! thank for making me dream (sorry for my english!) The photos are marvellous.
Love your Carbeth jumper which I am enjoying knitting, getting ready for our Aussie winter and will also enjoy knitting your cardigan which is simply fabulous. Thank you.
Love it, love it, love it! I have a short neck however and think that the neck on the cardigan would be too high for me. Would it be easy to make it narrower? Also love your skirt.
Just needed to say, you are adorable.
It’s gorgeous! I absolutely need one of these!!! Thank you for all the gorgeous patterns and photos!
Love love love it.
I’ve been waiting for it and am so pleased with what you’ve done! The yellow is sumptuous, and indeed chirpy perfection with the stripes. Hope you got a nice hot drink after. Cheers to you and Tom for all the effort that goes into such beautiful pictures.
Oh, my gosh, this is PERFECT and BEAUTIFUL! Love every stitch of it! This will immediately take the leading position of my knitting queue.
Oh! too bad I just bought the pullover pattern last week as I would now prefer the cardigan. It’s so so perfect in yellow! Great job Kate!
Love the cardigan. Where can I buy your skirt?
Love it! 💛
Oooh, I am definitely a cardi person, so I think I like this one even better than the original (pullover, not Carbeth itself–very fond memories of Carbeth ;)
Am so excited to be able to start this just as soon as I finish my original Carbeth.
Thanks
Love the yellow colour and the design. I think you have a winner there Kate, a timeless classic.
Another must-knit beauty! Only decision to be made now is what color(s) I will knit it in.
I love that, both style and colour.
It’s a beauty! Love the details.
I endorse all the previous comments. Very attractive style and colour. At 83 years old I had hung up my knitting needles, but looking at this lovely jacket, I am going to dust them off this weekend. Thank you for so many beautiful designs. jeanne
I already commented on Instagram but after seeing more photos I have to say that I so love, love, love this cardigan! (and it also gives me the opportunity to use some stash yarn / unrvavel a jumper that never really fit).
What a great design!
How do I get help with a pattern in the book of Haps? I am trying to follow the written instructions for Uncia. Thank you in advance for pointing me to any direction to get help.
Hi – there’s a thread about the pattern in our Ravelry group which may help?https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/kate-davies-love/3438142/1-25
You can also email Lucy (the designer) lucy@lucyhague.co.uk
Merci beaucoup – love your work and your incredible landscape!
That is soooo cool! And you are soooo elegant!
There doesn’t seem to be a purchase link on Ravelry. It just states the price?
Love, love this one:) Bonnie

think there was a wee glitch there – should be ok now?
Once again a gorgeous sweater knit by a gorgeous woman!
I agree – whole heartedly!!
I was looking so forward to this-thank you!
It is a gorgeous design, Kate. Love the colour as well.
Cheers from Galiano,
Helen
