Good morning! I thought you might like to see a short film Tom shot at Malin Head last week.
I really hope you like it! One of our hopes for this year’s club was to be able to introduce you to the Scottish landscape which inspired my collection – and with that aim Tom has been out and about shooting footage over the past few months. So in addition to each week’s patterns, essays and photography (and the culminating book) this year’s club will also include short films (through which we’ll be able to show you a little more of our part of Scotland). As we begin to get everything together, Tom has been honing his digital editorial skills with some of the footage we shot in Ireland last week. Please give the video a wee look – all feedback is gratefully received!
that was utterly divine, thankyou for sharing.

Uh! Drone shots i.e. from a non human perspective, are getting very tiresome. No emotional resonance or connection without a human perspective.

I have a critique if that’s OK:- I liked the film and also the music, but for me the changing of each scene on each clanging note (sorry, not a musician) detracted from the peacefulness of the film. The first time or two was OK then I found I was anticipating the scene change instead of watching the film, and when it happened it was jarring. Towards the end of the film the scenes change of their own accord, not with the music, and I found that more peaceful.

Your website doesn’t show correctly – there’s a big blank grey area at the top. It’s been like this for a week or so. I view in latest version of firefox on a Mac.
Thank you for sharing all the lovely photos and your beautiful work. You are an inspiration.

I like this a lot. The background music is perfect.
Some narration would be good to add to give us some idea of what we’re looking at – but not
a lot. Don’t want to take away from the serenity of the beautiful scenery.
Another idea is to add a short narrative in writing across the lower portion of the film (as long
as it’s not too disruptive to viewing the landscape).
Whether written or voice narrative, it needs to work together with the visuals. For people who
don’t live in or have never visited Scotland, this would be helpful.
As always, I applaud your inspiring and creative work!

Sorry to introduce a negative note, but I still have concerns about drones. Earlier this year I was enjoying the peace and beauty of my own local countryside, when it was suddenly shattered by the noise and presence of a drone flying round and round. It was actually quite frightening for me and the people around, until we realised what it was. I know I am old fashioned but there are so few places where we can escape human noise, be it cars or planes – I don’t relish the imposition of yet another one!

I really liked watching the short video and it took my thoughts on a journey. It was perfect. At the same time I am sharing Janice’s concerns about drones. On the one hand you can produce wonderful videos on the other hand they are really disturbing. I was on holiday in Iceland this year and it was the first time I’ve seen tourists with drones. We thought we were all alone and all of a sudden a drone appeared. We felt watched and our connection to the nature around us was distrubed. Therefore my feelings are a bit ambivalent.

I agree with Janice and Veronika about drones. I abhor them, and find it hard to believe that they can just be sent up and off … by anyone. I am an avid hillwalker and former rock-climber and all round mountaineer, but have always been careful to leave as small a mark on the landscape as possible. The idea that these devices are making different marks horrifies me: imagine a hazardous route on the Cuillin, or just a walk up Errigal, being disturbed by one.

I can assure you, Carole, that we leave no mark whatsoever on the landscape by photographing it with this device…or any other.

I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by…
…please excuse errors made in recalling exact words and punctuation but these lines came to me as I was watching the lovely film created by Tom. Thank you.

Wow, spot on! Except for one teeny thing — sea should be seas. I have the poem hanging over my computer because it was my mother’s favorite and I now live by the sea in Port Townsend, Washington. Thanks for quoting it!

Love the photography of course – and the accompanying music is perfect – stark, simple, yet rich and deep, paired with what we are viewing like fine wine with a good meal.:)

Hi from Canada. For someone who has been told that all ancestors on both sides of my family are from the UK and Ireland (but it would seem mostly from Scotland) I am so grateful for the beautiful photography (music is wonderful too) as I may never actually see it in person. Watching your film made me feel I’m actually there. Thank you.

Can you tell someone from the other side of the Atlantic…how does one pronounce ‘Malin’?
As a Scandinavian? Maw-lin?
Mah-lin?
May-lin?

“Ma” is pronounced like the “ma” in “math”.

Beautiful footage of a beautiful landscape! One minor technical comment (since I’m in the middle of finalizing a DVD right now), I find that even a very short cross-dissolve between some of the shots makes the transition less abrupt and helps things flow a little more smoothly.

I love to see scenery from above like this. Tom’s filming is so soothing, gentle and flowing, no sudden jarring notes. Wonderful and very relaxing to watch. It has just occurred to me that it is like a visual yoga, in that it is so relaxing. Now we just need you to fly down south and do the same thing for the Romney Marshes :) with a welter of landscape and historical details, oodles of sheep and alpacas, I think it would also make a very interesting aerial film.

Tom’s footage is stunning and truly shows off this magnificent coastline to it’s glorious best. In my line of work we occasionally come across people who use drones very irresponsibly but when they are used properly they are amazing. If this is just a taster I can’t wait to see the rest of the films as and when they are released together with the launch of the new club that I will definitely be joining. Thank you.

I really got into this, the birds eye view brought on a touch of vertigo (lol) just enough to make it edgy! I could almost hear the waves rushing through the cracks and fissures and pounding on the rocks below. Thank-you for such a nice break away from my landlocked home. I miss living by the sea, I didn’t realise how much! Just one question, what does the eire 80 signify? Excuse my ignorance.
