Hiya! It is I, Bruce. Today I am here to tell you about the phenomenon known as DOG DAYS.

Now, I was frankly very excited when I heard there were some DAYS named after DOG. If it was up to me, such days would involve many favourite DOG things: things such as SWIM, STICK, SNOOZE, SNACKS, RUN, and the occasional POTATO. I was quite sad when I discovered that DOG DAYS are apparently nothing to do with DOG at all. It seems that DOG DAYS are named after someone called Sirius, who apparently shines brightly in the night sky at this time of year. Well, I can tell you that I’ve looked up there at night and I can’t see him or his dogs anywhere. Whoever or wherever he is, I don’t think this Sirius bloke has much to do with actual dogs at all. In fact, as far as I can tell, like many issues of major concern to humans, DOG DAYS really just seem to be about the weather.

At this time of year, it is often hot. When it is hot, the flowers bloom, and the bees buzz.

. . . When it is hot Kate likes to knit outside.

. . . Tom likes to wear his shorts, and we all like to go out walking . . .

. . . I get to run around

. . . cool off in a stream

. . . and enjoy a swim even more than usual.

At night, we camp out in the van

. . . and get up early to enjoy the sunrise.

In fact, now I come to think of it, the human definition of DOG DAYS is pretty much exactly like the DOG one . . . apart from the notable absence of POTATOES. Ah well, I live in hope.

See you soon, love Bruce xx

Hiya Bruce: You brighten our days – which are DOG DAYS right now here in Cape May, New Jersey, filled with warmth and humidity. Seeing your photos makes us want to visit your world and that of my grandmother who lived in Dumbarton. Thank you for your bright spirit!

  4. Gorgeous photos :)

Long time reader, long time lurker here. Such a quandary: I should comment when I love something – just to repay in part the generosity of posting – but I’m only going to say the same thing as everyone else!

Anyway, I come here as a knitter and thinker more than as a dog fan, but when I see “It is I, Bruce!” I can’t help but get happy. Bruce’s voice and photos are so awesome. Thanks to both of you!

    1. all comments are appreciated – especially by Bruce!

  6. What a gorgeous dog!

Keep blogging – I want to hear that there was a happy ending to potato-gate!

  10. Bruce, it’s so great to see your post. You look healthy, happy, and handsome. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Greetings to your people.

  11. Beautiful post, beautiful photos Bruce!! you are adorable

  12. Lovely post❤

  13. LOL..I feel like I owe my dogs an apology and some treats

  14. BEST. POST. EVER. And Bruce, you’re a genius. Not just because you are so smart about the basics of happiness and point out the silliness of some of our nonsensical phrases, but also because you understand potatoes. Potatoes are the best ever…perhaps rivaled only by bananas, sour cream, butter and just a few other yummies. But potatoes are definitely at the top. Not only are you a genius, but you’re also one incredibly gorgeous creature. Your Dad’s camera sure does love you.

ps Those fuchsias are gorgeous too!

  15. Dog days for me Sadie and my side kick Tally are all about biking, hiking, swimming, sticks, mud, and laying around in the shade on the cool grass . . . bliss as our upright owner would call it!

Give that dog some potatoes! Actually, you can slice sweet potatoes and dehydrate or bake in a slow oven until dried out; makes great dog treats, fully approved by our terrier mix. Should work with white potatoes as well.

  17. Oh, Bruce. That opening shot of you. Killer! Happiest of Summers to you and family.

  18. What a lovely post , the shots are amazing ! <3

  19. Bruce,
I must say that Tom is quite talented to take such good photos of you, with your full coat of shiny black fur. My favorite is the one with Kate knitting in the background – you are so expressive in that shot! If only I wasn’t so camera shy, maybe that would help my mom get better photos of me – more personality, less black blob – like you!
    Love,
Duke (your distant black lab cousin from Colorado)

You are a lucky dog to have a day named for you! We always enjoy what you have to say.
Do you like cats? We’re two tabby rescue cats. We keep Peg company while she knits. We love to watch the birds that fly by our back yard.
One day we hope there’ll be a day named for us.
    All the best

  65. AH, heat…..ugly says the Wolfhound and her mate. We have a great run at 5 AM and do get to lie in a stream along the way. Then it is in the house near a fan. Unless we see something interesting in the field! Potatoes? Maybe fried :)

  67. Oh I never thought about what the dogs days really was, but Bruce your’e right it has something to do with Sirius. Here in Denmark the dogs days are from 22. july to 22 of august this year. But I think it is about time to introduce a real dog day. We have mothers day, fathers day, pancake day and so many other days, but we need a DOG DAY. What do you think Bruce what day should it be?
    Best wishes

Dear Bruce, Your Dog Days sound perfect to me! (I don’t like potatoes. I prefer salmon.) I spend mine snoozing on the lawn as my mistress knits or gardens. xo Lola (Lhasa Apso/Bichon Frise in Oregon)

  69. Yes, indeed, wishing you a potato or three, Bruce. Ceilidh and Tam would share their sweet potatoes with you if you were here. Tam would be afraid of you (he had a mixed puppihood), but Ceilidh would be your friend. Both would share, though.

    Bruce,
Not only are you an excellent writer, but you are quite photogenic as well!! I love how you look at things and push through all the nonsense and get to the meat (and/or potatoes) of the issues. While I love Kate’s notes and knitting and Tom’s amazing photos, it is also wonderful to hear from you occasionally and enjoy your fresh take on the state of the world. You remind us that life should be enjoyed, a good romp and a dip are the cure for many ills, and a good snack just makes it all work together. Enjoy the “dog days of summer” and keep those cards and letters coming!
    Linda D.

  77. Thank you for that, Bruce! My name actually is Sirius though. I’m a 16 1/2 year old Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog), and my Dog Days consist of walking around the block or lounging on my bed with a blurry eye on my human as she knits and weaves. But that is fine with me. Hope some potatoes come your way soon.
