on woman’s hour!

(over the bridge to the BBC at Pacific Quay . . . )

I am about to take a much-needed break, but just had to pop in and tell you about my forthcoming interview for BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. I’ve been listening to Woman’s Hour since I was a teenager, and the voices of Jeni Murray, Martha Kearney and Jane Garvey have accompanied many key moments in my life, in many different contexts. I’m a great admirer of the intelligence and range of the programme, of its general inclusivity, and perhaps particularly of its incisive coverage of women’s issues around the world. I don’t have much of a desire for public appearances, or whatever, but Tom and my mum will both tell you that I’ve long held a quiet ambition to appear on Woman’s Hour . . . and that this has now come to pass is entirely thanks to a reader of this blog, whom I have never (knowingly) met or spoken to, who kindly recommended me to the programme’s production team. If you are out there, dear reader, thank you so very much – I feel both humbled and honoured by your recommendation, which has fulfilled a long held dream! I popped down to Pacific Quay in Glasgow this morning, sat in a studio, and really enjoyed chatting with Jane Garvey. If you are in the UK, you’ll be able to hear my interview with Jane as part of Woman’s Hour Listener Week on Monday July 11th. To create an interesting “chain” of interviewees, who will each appear on the programme during listener week, I was asked to nominate a woman who had inspired me . . . can you guess who I suggested?

Now for a wee break, with lots of knitting, a few saved-up audio books and (hopefully) a little sunshine. I hope you are all enjoying the start of July – I will be back here to catch up with you later this month.

x

  1. Finally got round to listening to Woman’s Hour [I must admit it’s not something I normally listen to; I kind of associate it with things my mother would listen to, like the Archers], and your link too – I have bought Felix’s book but not progressed very far with it (I think I can say it’s a classic though – and beautifully produced) so far, but one of the disadvantages is that she uses the Shetland jumper weight (4 ply to mere mortals) and there are so many colours – I am trying to re-colour a cardigan in Rowan’s Felted Tweed Aran and there aren’t many colours and I am pretty sure it’s one of the many yarns that Rowan decided in their wisdom to discontinue, and I am finding it quite hard to re-colour this yarn. Getting back to Woman’s Hour your story was an inspiring one – and is inspiring. As someone with Fibromyalgia I can completely empathise with the tiredness thing. Slainte.

  2. Getting caught up on Women’s Hour podcasts so just heard your interview on the show. Lovely! :)
Will be adding your blog to my reader list. :)

Listening to Weekend Women’s Hour in the car today, tuned in part-way through an interesting interview, a woman talking about stroke. Talk moved on to knitting & patterns… & I thought, is this Kate Davies? And it was! It was moving to hear you speak about relearning to knit as part of reclaiming your identity. Great stuff. (I’m on my third Happy for Harriet, by the way. Love that pattern.) 💐

  4. Heard the interview. Great. Found the blog. Even better. Have loved knitting for years. Grew up in Glasgow and my Granny (among others) used to say when it was cold ….. You’ll need to get “happed” up and I guess having seen your blog this is where the saying came from.

  5. I’ve just listened to your interview on Woman’s Hour and had to comment on your blog to say how inspired I was by your story. I am going to enjoy reading through your blog.

  6. Your Women’s Hour interview was wonderful!! It was so nice to be able to actually hear your voice not just imagine what it sounded like. I live in the US and never heard of this program, but now I will be listening on a regular basis.

So enjoyed your interview. What an honour to be interviewed for Woman’s Hour. I’ve followed your blog since shortly before your stroke, and you have been an inspiration to me. Your success is due to your vision, your talent and your imagination, (and, may I say, your doggedness?). Congratulations on all you have achieved, and I am sure, and hope, there will be more to come! Enjoy your holiday, rest and relax, and come back full of energy and even more ideas.

  8. happy to think of you resting and concatenating. i wonder if you know of the very interesting knitting/hack of gridjunky? he does fascinating work.

  9. Thank you. I loved this interview. It made me cry. After a brain injury myself 6 yrs ago I also turned to knitting and am hoping to study textiles soon as my dream is to become a knitwear designer. Thank you for showing me that dream is possible. You’re an inspiration.

  10. Great interview! My son is a sonic artist so I found it particularly fascinating. I loved the comparison of your two knitting sound art projects; the necessity for giant needles and the simplicity of the clock. Thank you for brightening Woman’s Hour!

  11. Hi Kate – really pleased to have caught the interview on Woman’s Hour (in the car), now discovered your blog and have so enjoyed reading about the Steamies. Looking forward to future posts.

  12. Am listening to your interview on the bus in Hobart (Tasmania ) – so fantastic, a beautiful interview about big, serious topics but done so generously and positively. And so excited to hear Felix tomorrow!

  14. Rushed home to listen, had a lovely surprise on the way home listening to you speak to Simon Mayo about socks. The women’s hour broadcast was excellent, and I shall be listening tomorrow to discover Felix. You sound just as I imagined so warm and friendly and I loved the story about the cheese.Hope you are enjoying your holiday.

  42. Congratulations, Kate! I’ll be listening. Enjoy your break.

  43. That might have been me – when you won the business award I sent an email to a friend on BBC Breakfast and said to forward it to Woman’s Hour if they thought it was more their thing. I hope it was .. brilliant! (I used to share a sly cigarette with Jeni Murray when we worked at Oxford Road in Manchester – she’s a lovely person – formidable and funny – can’t wait to hear it.)

  44. This is so brilliant!! I love woman’s hour and can’t wait to hear your interview. Well done! P.s. Could Hazel Tindall be your nominee perhaps…??

  45. Looking forward to hearing the podcast. I hope you spoke clearly so I can hear it here in Australia.

  66. I will try to listen in on the podcast way over here in Virginia — while I knit away on my summer project, a Hap for Harriet (actually for ME) which I’m greatly enjoying making up in alpaca/silk in a color called ‘swimming pool.’ How summery — I’m having a great time with it, thanks to you. So, Well Done on your radio-dream-come-true. You certainly deserve that & a wonderful summer break, too.
