Well, we won! Tom and I travelled down to London yesterday and last night at the QEII centre in Westminster were awarded the title of Microbusiness of the Year, 2016! Here I am with two Tims receiving my award: on the right is Tim Lazenby, head of FSB insurance (who sponsored the award), and on the left is Tim Campbell, founder of the Bright Ideas Trust (who compered the evening brilliantly). If I look a wee bit shell-shocked, that’s because I was.

award

We had a wonderful time, meeting some really interesting and inspiring people, and celebrating the UK’s many innovative small businesses such as Fisherton Mill (family business of the year), Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm (Start-Up of the year) and the 918 coffee company (who won the best overall business of the year award for their pioneering work developing zero-waste technology).

The evening was very thought-provoking, and I’m sure I’ll have more to say about it later, but for now I just wanted to share the news, say a big thankyou to the FSB and Worldpay for the award, and another massive thanks to all of you for your support.

Well, I’m off to relax and knit, while Tom investigates the ins and outs of having the words MICROBUSINESS OF THE YEAR emblazoned loudly on our van.

love to you all
Kate x

  1. Congratulations to all of you for the work, commitment and creativity that this win recognizes. Just imagining what you’re up to keeps me energized in my own efforts and I tap into the website regularly for knitting news. Great touch by the way re the van as herald and hats off to Britain for having such awards.. I have purchased things from a few smallish businesses in Britain, most notably Seasalt, the Little Green Sheep, Natural Mat and of course our own Kate Davies Designs; in every case the service, courtesy and concern about my satisfaction over the fact of the sale has been exemplary. All best, robin

How wonderful that your careful attention to history, quality, beauty, and craft have been rewarded in this way. Well done–I’m sure we all look forward to your next project(s)! Me–I need to get started on my Deco kit that arrived this week here in New Jersey!

  6. Well done, indeed. And instead of painting the van, why not have one of those giant magnets made that you can affix to the van now, and place in a frame for a wall at a future date, as a lovely remembrance.

  17. Congratulations on winning.
You are now a healthy, successful businesswoman, with good creative ideas for knitted garments as well as your idea of selling your own brand of wool.
Now you can continue your life without the stress of your former profession and can leave your stroke behind you.
I am looking forward to your next designs and maybe some different kind of wool?
    Cheers

  18. Hi Kate and Congratulations. I mean, CONGRATULATIONS!

The award is well deserved — you and Tom are amazing.

One quick thought on emblazoning the van (you’ve likely thought of this yourselves, so I share it “just in case”): reference the year so that you don’t have to retrofit the emblazoning next year. Something along the lines of “2016 FSB Small Business of the Year Winner.”

Wishing you well and loving every success you achieve,

    Susan
