Have you ever read The Battle for Christmas? It’s not the most scholarly work, but it’s a lot of fun to read. I found the Victorians’ turn on Christmas fascinating, especially since we’ve since taken their commercialized and sentimentalized version as the original, traditional one. The things everyone complains about every year were present from the start of modern Christmas, but we always contrive to make it part and parcel of our times.
As an American, I also find it interesting, because Christmas celebration was illegal in many of our states for quite a while. It was such a naughty holiday!
