It is one of those times when I feel peculiar about posting about something personal. But we’ve been having such upheaval over the past few days I thought I would mention what was going on.
On Sunday evening, Mr B (lets give him his real name today — Tom) tripped and stumbled into our living room door. This door is an ancient 1960s affair with three large panels of glass in it. One panel broke across his palms, severing tendons, arteries and nerves in the fingers of his left hand. The scary word ‘amputation’ was muttered a few times, but the plastic surgeons at Livingston hospital did a really amazing job reconstructing his poor hand. He has no feeling in his fingers, cannot move the hand, and the healing of the tendons and nerves will be a very long process. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the whole experience has been pretty horrific.

So there we go. I am sure there will be difficult moments ahead: Tom’s going to find it hard spending a couple of months without running or cycling, let alone not being able to do the foolish everyday stuff like opening jars, buttoning shirts, brewing beer &c. And did I mention he’s a scientist? No lab work for him for a while. But at least he’s still got both hands, and I am around to bake him pies and suchlike. There must and shall be pies. And, as usual, I have been very cheered by how superbly supportive my friends and family are. Folk really are genuinely cheering.

Anyway, I’ll be back with more of the usual bloggy stuff soon

  1. i am sending tom lots of healing wishes.

  2. Oh bless, it is so true that we can really injure ourselves just by walking around the house!! I really hope that Tom will feel better soon but, hey, with all those pies on their way, he should at least feel a little bit happy. Sending you both best wishes!!!

  3. Eek.

That sounds like a very scary accident. I am glad Tom didnàt lose his hand but it sounds very painful and hard all the same.

    Please forgive Italian computer typos…

Am sending you both tonnes and tonnnes of good wishes and hand-love. I hope Mr B recovers feeling quickly… the nerves will rebuild themselves in time I think? I know itàs not the same but after my foot surgery I had no feeling in my big toes or on the sides of my feet where the nerves were cut and Iàve got a lot of the feeling back now so it will come back! Hang on in there.

    Thinking of you xx

So sorry to read about this horrific sounding upheaval! Good wishes and positive thoughts to you and Tom for a full and speedy recovery. Hope Jesus will help with restorative purring :-)

  9. I have only recently started reading your blog and I love it. Your work and your photography are stunning (my heart aches for the Scottish Isles since your holiday posts). I also admire these pages as you do share some parts of your life not about beautiful (and material) things.
So – my comment is to wish you the very best at a difficult time and to share my hope for your husband’s full recovery.

  10. Gosh! I am very sorry to hear that. I hope he has a full and fast recovery and a lot of patient for both of you!
    Best wishes

  11. Oh poor Tom, these things happen so suddenly and then your life is turned upside down for months. My partner needed surgery on both his hands (thankfully not at the same time) and although the healing process was painful and frustrating for all concerned, it did get better. I hope Tom’s does too.

So sorry to hear about Tom. Hope it isn’t too long before he has full mobility back in his hand. Good to read your news on Islay

  13. So glad he received what sounds like excellent medical care, and I’m sending warm, healing thoughts your way!

  14. What a bummer. I’m sending quick healing wishes to your Tom.

  15. Sending positive vibes to Tom for recovery and strength during the painful times ahead and to you for stamina as you help him through this. My best.

  16. Oh no, poor you. My dad put his hand through a glass pane of a door about 8 years ago. The cuts healed really well but it does take time and he still had ‘numb’ patches on his hands for a good 5 years afterwards. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  17. Livingston Hospital did a wonderful job on restoring my hand to working order after I somehow injured it during pregnancy/ childbirth. Had a frustrating year of not being able to knit or write properly but now ten years on I’d forgotten, until I read your post, all about it. Best wishes for Tom’s recovery.

  18. Oh how awful. Lots of good wishes to the two of you as he gets better. He’s always sounded like a hardy sort of a chestnut so I’m sure he’ll do brilliantly. Take care, both of you!

Horrific indeed. So sorry to hear about this. Sending you both every good wish for Tom’s complete recovery.

  20. That sounds horrible. I am sorry and happy for you both, the surgeons did well and although healing will be tough, Tom has both hands. Speedy recovery!

  21. Christ. That’s horrible. I wish you (both) a good recovery.

  22. What a horrible accident! So glad that he’s still got the hand, and that he’s got you to cheer him, button his shirts, and make him pies. I hope he has a speedy recovery!

  23. Oh my God! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  24. That must have been so scary for both of you. I don’t normally comment but I had to wish you well. A friend of mine had an awful accident in India with similar results and botched care immediately afterwards. Yet with good doctors, rehab and plenty of time she can now do nearly everything with her hand. I hope Tom is able to do the same – keep your spirits up!

  25. Oh my goodness! I’m so so very sorry – I tensed up reading this. Poor Tom. I hope he recovers as quickly as can be expected and is back to normal everyday activity soon. Good luck to both of you in the days and months to come.

Oh, I am really sorry to hear this–it must have been terrifying and I’m sure recovery will be a pain. Best wishes for a complete recovery for his hands.

When my brother-in-law broke his arm badly a few years ago and needed a plate put it, the surgeon told him comfortingly, “You’ll have a MANLY scar there.” I’m sure THAT thought will cheer Tom up…?!

    best wishes for you guys

  27. Oh crumbs, best wishes to you both and I hope Tom makes a speedy and full recovery.

Sounds horrid, but I am glad to hear he is on the mend. Lots of luck for a speedy recovery x

  29. Just to wish a fast and good recovery for Tom. And the best for both of you.

  30. Oh no! I hope he’s healed and comfortable soon!

  31. ack, oh no!! can’t imagine. hope he heals up super fast!!!!

  32. Best wishes to the patient and to you both, really, hoping for a quick recovery/Anna

That sounds similar to the injury someone got when a floer arrangement I did fell on them and the glass cut their arm. He was in his eighties and was in plaster for about four months and has made a full recovery.
Hope Tom copes ok with the plaster and heals well.

you’ve made me think about the glass that is in my doors…

  34. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and gentle rehabilitation!

tell him that i had [a much less serious, but serious] injury to my left hand, and that a.) going to the gym every day with my cast on really helped with the pain and that b.) physical therapists — the hand ones — are the most amazing people in the world, and aside from the excruciating pain as the bitches flex your stump to new angles of hyperflexed coolness, there will be a lot of laughs.
it will get better, i promise. don’t forget to go to the gym for an hour a day.

  36. Oh Wazzuki, what an awful, frightening experience for you both. Positive thoughts are winging their way down from the highlands to you. Wishing you both all the very best for a good recovery. Hugs.

  37. I’m sorry to hear about Tom’s accident. That must have been quite a scare! I hope the physical therapy (and/or OT?) goes wonderfully and as fast as possible.

  38. I am astonished at what surgery can achieve, and so glad that the prognosis is good. Best wishes to the patient and yourself. He couldn’t have a better companion to bake him pies.

  39. Sending ‘speedy & full recovery’ thoughts to your Tom.

  40. Aii, I had wondered if you were OK, I am sorry to hear this has happened, and I hope his hand mends fast and clean. He’s a lucky man to have a pie-maker standing by. You could knit him fancy bandages too? Maybe not.
