Good morning! I hope you have had a restful and restorative few weeks. Here in Kintyre we’ve been enjoying lots of cold weather walking, and a glorious New Year rainbow on our local beach.
This joyous arc of light sets the tone for 2025, which we are beginning with a bang, and a brand new club!

For many of us in the northern hemisphere, January and February can be challenging months.

The twinkling baubles of the festive season are behind us and spring’s green shoots can seem a long way off.

But, if you look hard enough, you’ll find this time of year is the opposite of gloomy.

The winter sky is at its most spectacular . . .

. . . low light glances gracefully through the bare branches of trees and ocean waves . . .

. . . while landscapes of all kinds sing with gorgeous colours and textures that are invisible at other times of year.

There are so many ways of making light of these dark months, and that’s what we are going to set our minds and hands to during this new club!

The creative heart of Making Light is, of course, the knitting. I’ve really enjoyed myself over the past few months working on cold weather garments and accessories that I’ve designed specifically for this time of year. I’ve returned to my first love – stranded knitting – and have created a collection of designs with Schiehallion and Ooskit (yes, that is a new deep brown chocolatey shade of Ooskit – yum)

Exploring our seasonal theme of light and dark, my new collection features graphic two-tone colourwork and classic knits that make the most of bold motifs. Throughout each week of the club, these high-contrast patterns will be released in pairs, accompanied by inspiring short reads and photographic essays that offer fresh perspectives on our theme of Making Light.

From the distinctive pleasures of taking a walk at dawn to the importance of darkness in photography . . . .

. . . we’ll share our favourite strategies for finding uplifting moments, creative joy, and general good cheer at a time of year when many of us might feel at our lowest.

As a Making Light club member you’ll receive:
*a brand new collection of 12 patterns (plus a few bonuses and surprises), delivered in pairs to your Ravelry library (or inbox) every week.
*inspiring short reads exploring fresh perspectives on the theme of making light in the dark months of the year
*a beautiful print book which includes all of the club patterns and bonus designs, alongside photographic meditations on our theme of light and dark (taking a similar aesthetic and conceptual approach to our Sark book)
*10% club discount off everything in the KDD shop
The Making Light club will last for 6 weeks (plus a fun bonus week) and begins on January 24th

Will you join us?
You’ll find all the information you need about the club here, and I’ll be back tomorrow to say more about choffer – our beautiful new yarn.

See you then!

Dear Kate, wonderful news! I’d line to participate but need to pay with PayPal due to issues with credit cards from Argentina. We’ve already done so before when I participated in the Allover club with Maylin’s invaluable help (and patience). I’ve misplaced the address though. Could you please direct me to her once again? Thank you! Looking forward to this new club! Kindly, Alejandra
Hi Alejandra! Maylin will be very happy to sort this out for you – just email her at help@katedaviesdesigns.com – waving from Scotland 👋
As someone who has often struggled through January and February, I am finding unexpected pleasure in the stark and cold this year. Like you, Kate, I also recently moved to a coastal setting of extraordinary natural beauty, and I’m wondering if that move is partly responsible for my taking greater joy in the kind of beauty winter can bring. (Also, a job that requires me to patrol a windy hilltop under the moon…) So your post spoke to me, and I look forward to exploring musings on winter light as part of the club…as indeed, one of your clubs was the highlight of an otherwise difficult winter for me several years ago.
Thank you for writing – for what and how you wrote – about the beauty and hidden joy of nature in the post-Christmas-New Year winter!
Hi Deepa, can you email us at help@katedaviesdesigns.com so we can sort out paypal for you?
Hello
I am interested in the blue jumper with patterned yoke that is behind the Lynsey Walter necklace. Would you be kind enough to tell me how I might get the pattern and the same wool.
Many thanks
Di Robson

I’m drawn in by the mention of light Kate as living in northern isles of Scotland and recently losing my dear dad last month I’m in need of looking for some light. You wrote about him in your Shetland Oo book. My mum passed only 13 months earlier.
So I’ve signed up and am keen to see what comes next. As I know from previous experience with your clubs they give me something to look forward to.
Emily! I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. Thinking of you x
That new deep brown shade really speaks to me. LOVE! Many years ago during a trip to the UK I spent about 50% of my time scouting out Black Welsh Mountain wool (with some success). This color makes me think of that happy time.
New club , winter knits , light , just what I need , so thank you .
Sorry it’s because I had something else in my basket x
Glad you figured it out – we have to set the clubs up to be purchased separately!
Good morning,
I am trying to purchase making ligh and I can select UK as my delivery location but there doesn’t appear to be a button for adding it to my basket.
Can you please help?
Thx Julie
