Writing and photography for our forthcoming Haps book has rather intensely occupied the last month, and I’m now really hap-py to say the end is in sight, as we put the finishing touches to the copy and prepare everything for layout. The sight of a somewhat frazzled me, typing furiously at my desk at 5am in some old pyjamas, is not a sight that anyone would want to see, but I thought you might enjoy a few other behind-the-scenes glimpses at what’s been going on.
Gudrun and Bruce at Muckle Bousta
Donna Smith at Houlland
Tom and Lucy Hague, ascending Calton Hill
Me, on photographic assistant duty, trying not to blow away with my reflector.
Amazing Anne Eunson, helping me out enormously with her mahooosive hap board
Tom setting up his mini-studio in the Shetland Museum store
Its a wrap! Or is that a hap?!
Some of these photographs should give you some hints as to the identities of some of the book’s contributors and collaborators . . . but there’s more!
In a few days time I’ll be sending out our regular newsletter, in which I will reveal the names of the designers who have created haps especially for the book, and with whom I’m very proud to work.
If you’d like to know all the news about the Book of Haps as we approach publication in the coming weeks, then I suggest you sign up now!
More soon!
I still have no idea what a hap could be, the dictionary doesn’t help much, but I’m waiting for the book, because I’m sur I will love it just as I like avery thing you offer…

hi! a hap is simply a Scottish / Shetland word for a simple shawl or wrap.

I know this isn’t anything to do with the current thread but I went to Gawthorpe today expecting to see the collection. They are still assembling the textile rooms so they are closed off at the moment. It would be worth checking http://www.gawthorpetextiles.org.uk. to see if exhibits are ready before setting off to avoid disappointment, especially if travelling far. I wonder if you want to share this on your blog Kate. Jo

I saw these listed on an auction site today and am very curious as to what they are (Lot 2066 onwards). You’ve mentioned the belt of Shetland knitting use, but what are these? A new line of research perhaps?

Just saw that WGBH in Boston is using “Colours of Shetland” as a gift to those who pledge support. During the session asking for money they showed a model of one of your hats. Very lovely. Best BER

You can find the pattern for this sweater on Ravelry. It’s the “Sandsound Sweater”
designed by Outi Kater.

Hmmm – never realised it before, but a hap board looks an awful lot like a warping frame…
