two-kates project bag

I’ve written a tutorial so you can stitch up your own one of these:

bag11

I’ve named it Two-Kates because two of us were involved in the design.
It’s very simple to make and I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that my instructions are easy to follow, even for a very beginner sewer. I’ve tried to spell everything out, but if you find anything woefully unclear, please do tell me.

You can download the PDF here:
TWO KATES
feel free to link, but please don’t reproduce the PDF on your own site.
Thankyou!

  1. Thank you for a great project.
I like how the ‘strap’ helps enclose the bag, yet there’s still good access.
I have tons of quilting cottons that I don’t want to chop too small and this looks to be a good use for them.
    Thanks again!

  2. These are so cute….I have just started to gain a little confidence with the sewing machine…tempted to try one of these….would you say a beginner can handle it?

  3. Thank you very much! I’m not a very good seamstress but this bag is just adorable… And I just happen to have bought fabrics that I was wondering how to use, so.

  4. How kind you are to share such a lovely pattern. Perfect timing too – I got out my very dusty and unloved sewing machine today in order to hem some curtains, and then felt the urge to try something a bit more exciting. Et voila! your bag and my first step into towards sewing something more than a hem. Now you’ll have to create a gallery of bags in place of the parliament of o w l s. A haul perhaps. Love the paper dolls too.

  5. I love this because it is almost exactly like a knitting bag passed down to me from my Gramma, made out of a weird polyester-y print from, well, from before my conception. Yours is very pretty, and not polyester. I’ll try to take a pic of mine and email you, just for laughs.

  6. Thanks to you and the other Kate for sharing this nice project. I think I will put my OWL-sweater in it, once the yarn for it has arrived :-)

  7. I have perhaps a very dumb question. Is the seam allowence included in the paper template? Or do I have to add that before cutting out the fabric??? Thanks so much!

  8. Great pattern. You did a fine job explaining the project. I was wondering if maybe you could do that ‘side seam to bottom seam’ trick and stitch across the ‘V’ that results. Would give a shaped bottom that would help it stand up.
    Blessings!

  9. I’m a beginner sewer and I have all kinds of plans for this one. A few for myself and one for each granddaughter to take lunch/toys when traveling. THANK YOU!

  10. What a wonderful pattern. I’m so thrilled that I could whip one up in around an hour!! And it’s the first time I’ve sat down with my sewing machine for at least 18 months!! THANK YOU!!

  11. Lovely. Any reason, though, for leaving an opening for turning inside the bag rather than just leaving the top of one of the handle-pieces open (since they’d be large enough and you’re going to be stitching over them anyway)?

  12. Thank you for this great tutorial, it is so good for sewing beginners!
Only the last step – closing handle – wasn’t really clear to me, I made it then on my own way.
I showed my bag on my blog (and linked to this page), maybe you are interested to see it (although I write in German on my blog).

    Thank you once again :)
    Many greetings from Germany!

  13. Thank you very much for sharing your tutorial, I’ll try it in a few days!!!
Via “Creadienstag” and “Goldengelchen” (see below) I found your blog (and the bag).

    Many thanks from Germany

  14. This is awesome. I just used your directions to make a mini purse (instead of using newspaper I just used a regular 8.5×11 sheet). The result was so cute and I LOVE that it is reversible. Your directions were so clear and easy to follow. Thanks for sharing.
